Road Town, Tortola – The British Virgin Islands Amateur Volleyball Association (BVIAVA) Referee Clinic concluded on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 with four (4) participants completing the three day course that was held at the BVI Olympic Committee Office.
The Association’s Referee Coordinator, Stephen Payne was very pleased with the participants, Tamisha Georges, Aneek Peters, Amadona Creese and Tyalia Nibbs on their success after passing a test on the final day of the three day course.
The four (4) ladies who are also players will join Stephen Payne and Willis Potter on the Referee’s panel for the 2012 BVIAVA Power League, set to commence on 11th February.
BVIAVA PRO Cleave Farrington interviewed the four ladies during the Clinic about their experience at the workshop.
Aneek Peters stated “This is like a refresher for me after doing it last year, it makes you re-think as you’re on a different level as oppose to being a player”.
Amadona Creese said “The course gave me an opportunity to advance in volleyball not just as a player but as a future referee in the territory; it has been enlightening and I hope to eventually achieve my certification”.
Tamisha Georges said “the clinic was a refresher for me, having already completed training in 2011 for preparation of the 2011 league in which I had actually refereed and umpired a few games. Being a referee enhances your knowledge of the game and makes you a better player”. Ms. Georges also stated that becoming a referee is her way of ensuring her continuous contribution to the sport in the territory.
Tyalia Nibbs said “It was very interesting; I learned a lot of things I never knew. With this knowledge, I can be an even better player and I have more appreciation for the sport”.
Whilst the initial step qualifies them to officiate at the local level, it also represents the first step towards becoming a NORCECA Regional Referee.
