Thursday, June 14 – After an exciting evening of eloquent speech delivery student Anya Stevens of the Bregado Flax Education Centre Primary Division emerged victorious at the first Toastmaster’s primary school speech contest in Virgin Gorda last evening.
Mr. Reshawn Stevens of Assembly of God Cornerstone and Mr. Quentin Warren of the Little Rainbow School captured second and third place, respectively. The other participating students were Ms. Rakeshea Young of Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School; Ms. Kira Samuel of Valley Day School and Mr. Francesco Flax of St. Mary’s.
The event, which was opened to the Virgin Gorda private and public primary schools, was hosted by the Virgin Gorda Pioneers Toastmasters Club.
At a packed Catholic Community Centre, the six students presented speeches on the question, “Are students going too far with the use of Facebook?”
Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn in his opening remarks congratulated the Virgin Gorda Pioneers Toastmasters Club for promoting healthy dialogue and development of communication skills among the youth.
Speaking on the benefits of public speaking, Minister Walwyn in his remarks said “We are all well aware of the confidence that can be had in knowing how to express oneself and being able to articulate one’s views. That confidence can inspire a young person to be attracted to opportunities that can lead to leadership roles in school, on the job and in the wider society.”
He continued, “Importantly it allows our young people to find positive outlets for expression and therefore positive contributions to our community.”
Ms. Kimberly George, President of the Virgin Gorda Toastmasters Club in her remarks said that the Toastmasters Club is a training ground where individuals can learn in the areas of communication and encouraged persons to aspire to high standards.
Mr. Hilroy George, Principal of the Bregado Flax Primary School said he was “ecstatic, overjoyed and very proud of this accomplishment.” He said this will help boost the reputation of the school as the largest learning institution on Virgin Gorda. He described Ms. Anya Stevens as one of the ‘best’ and thanked all those who played a part in her success including her tutor, reading coach, mother and other relatives.
Ms. Stevens, the youngest of the six competitors said, she was happy of her win and felt great. She said that as part of her preparations she wrote and rewrote her drafts and read them out loud to her class mates, the principal and some teachers. Her words of encouragement to others students were “Never Give up. Always believe that you can do it.”
Ms. Stevens was awarded an iPad 3. Mr. Stevens received a Kindle Fire while Mr. Warren received a Netbook.
All participants received a $50 gift certificate from National education BookStore, a certificate of participation and a gift bag with supplies for the next grade level. The mistress of ceremonies was Toastmaster Ms. Yvonntte Stevens.
The Ministry of Education and Culture supports public/private partnerships and initiatives to support healthy academic competitions as they strive to “Create a Culture of Excellence”.

Jack You Are Indeed A Jack***! The Only Person That Sucks Is You With Your Stupid Comments! Anya Deserved To Win Simply Because She Was The BEST! Go And Find The Rest Of Your Brain!!!!! Ignorant Fool!!!!!!!!!!
Hearty congratulations to all the competitors as well as to the VG Toastmasters for helping to put our children in a positive spotlight.
When our children do well, we need to applaud them. I felt that this event was well supported. Congratulations also to the teachers and the coaches.
quentin could not win because both the boy from corner stone school and the girl from bregado flax were better. he was just loud. let us face the facts. his voice was louder. that does not justify that the judges appreciated that he met the required criteria to ensure a win.
If you dont believe it just ask the Hon. Myron V. Walwyn. He has said who he thought was the best and the judges agreed. Get over it.
everyone did well, but I wanted Quentin to win
i agree with jack.Quentin should have won
