Police on St. Croix made a routine traffic stop that turned out to be anything but routine.
The female driver happened to have a newborn baby travelling with her in the car. But the infant was not in a rear facing car seat, the infant was enclosed in her mothers’ purse, which was placed on the front seat.
The bizarre situation occurred at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday April 3 on La Grande Princess road near the basketball court.
A patrol officer stopped a white Ford Ranger due to a cracked windshield. While requesting the drivers’ license and registration, the officer heard a baby cry. Not seeing a baby in the car, the officer asked the driver, “Miss where is the baby?” The driver unzipped a black purse that was on the front passenger seat next to her and revealed a newborn baby girl.
The officer immediately called 911 and his supervisor. The officer conducted a field interview with the driver who she did not have any prenatal care and the child has yet to see a doctor. The officer said, “She told me she birthed the baby at home by herself a week ago.”
EMTs arrived on the scene and took the infant to the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and medical center for evaluation. Representatives from the Department of Human Services were also call to interview the mother. Other officers from the VIPD brought a new car seat to the mother at the hospital.
This case has been turned over to the Department of Human Services. The mother may still face criminal charges, said St. Croix Police Chief Christopher Howell.
“I thought I saw everything in my years of police work, Chief Howell said. “But this is unbelievable.”

It is rumored the female is Caucasian from the mainland and that is the reason why no family support is evidenced. This is truly divine intervention.
Reality is most people do not have the finances they need and once you donot have insurance they turn you away. Down payment have to be paid before you even lay on the bed. Let us hear both sides of the story before judging, i am not saying what she did is right but we need to show more love towards each other, these are the trying days. we are so quick to judge until it happens to us.
is that really what she has as her car seat & Baby carrier shame on you woman or should i say child u r a unfit parent OMG……
Everybody is commenting that the woman is crazy or lost her mind. Have any of you heard about postpartum depression. it a very serious disorder. i am a mother of 2 at the age of 25 went through this and i couldnt believe some of the things i said and wanted to do to my kids. a mother would not know if shes going through this unless someone else sees the signs and get her help.
I agree with you. Unfortunately as humans we are always quick to judge others based only on what we have heard as opposed to what we alctually know. On another note, it is probably safe to say that many of the critics who have offered their opinion probably never even heard of postpartum depression. To them this is something totally alien. Smile
Phil i agree with you, but there is also Pre partum depression, she may have had it while being pregnant that cause her not to form a relationship with the baby.
WOW this sounds like some lifetime mess… wow…. I wonder if this baby was stolen. Craziness!!! The world is coming to an end!!!
as shocking as this might sounds. Its not really unheard of … just never so close to home or we never report these type of cases until now.
How many times you hear in international media about young girls so afraid to tell anyone they are pregnant they end up having a baby without anyone knowing ..cases of babies being dumped in the garbage or left on door steps
as human beings we can be pretty hard on each other .. there is a reason why people study mental health
PURE MADDNESSSSS
There are many people who would like to adopt. For those persons who have no intent on keeping their child or endangering their child’s life in any way, please contact social services. I am sure they would be more than willing to find a suitable home for that child.
Maybe she had no money these hospital bills are outrageous
That does not give her the right to place the baby in a purse. THAT IS MADNESS. If she needed help why not ask for it.
man.. the woman said she gave birth on the street somewhere (not in the hospital)… she is going through something… what she did was wrong but c’mon …the police didnt charge her because they can see that she is sick. You dont hear of girls delivering babies and throughing them in the dumpster… the lady was confused lost ..maybe on drugs.. good job police..
help the lady
(WHAT EVER) stop it, it does not matter if she have money or not did u read the first thing the police officer said, she had the baby in her purse wat dat got to do wid hospital bill. i well want a child rite now, may god have mercy on her and the baby.
What does money have to do with placing your baby with Social Services!!
this is the most disturbing thing i ever hard…what was she planning to do to the baby…wow the more u live the more u see/hear thing…hmm i hope the baby ok though:(
What is not to like about this comment???????????
buttons are too close… prob a mistake
I am a social worker and I have a lot of questions about this one. Like where is her family, has no one known that she had the baby? What is her bond/attachment to this child – obviously not much if the baby had not been taken to the doctor. Why zip the baby up in a bag and not put it in a basket to travel around since she didn’t have a car seat .. and how old is this mother, does she has a hx of depression, does have any problems that affect her mental capacity. If I didn’t have a family member that could serve as a resource for this child until further investigation, the baby needs to be put into care and a psychological evaluation and parental fitness assessment be done on this mother. The child is too vulnerable to be with mom who obviously lacks care giver capacity right now. Thank God the officer pulled mom over when he did. #smh
i agree cause when i had my son i suffered from postpartum depression so maybe she is depressed…i did not want my family to knowwhen baby was expected because they always view their displeasure about such…I did not have unprotected sex either…so before casting judgement on this lady find out what went wronmg???
Sorry but i disagree with you.
WHAT EVER u again u just taking bull rite now, s=dont u have sense the hold point other trying to make is y she put the baby in her purse, as rmb say a basket could of work better.
TALING
(TALKING) typing error i typing to fast sorry bout the spelling

But St. Croix has a much longer runway. LOL
Didn’t catch your failed attempt at an unnecessary joke.

U must be dumb. Something like this can happened anywhere so I don’t know what u talking about
to hmmmm, i thought is only in Tola a politician daughter can get caught smuggling weed into the prison and nothing come of it, or a politician brother can butt rape a little girl and get a retrial, or someone gets convicted of stealing government funds and still run for election a couple years after, or have a judge tell the then premier that his is a corrupt man and he keeps being the premier and the ppl of VG still want him, or you have the highest incidences of incest in the Caribbean (leave all you cousin and sisters and sons and daughters alone), or you customs officers get arrested for stealing IPone. Dont start nothing, cause we all have bad, but i got your ticket, dont make me punch it.
This happens not only in Tortola but all over the world. You need to keep up dated.
whatever the truth hurt

It happens all over the world, you so quick to say Jamaica.
i aint no jamaican but u cant be dising the people dem like dat. no matter weh u go it have crazy people
More to come people more to come the minds of people in this world is evil
The bag zipped up suggest to me that this was and attempt to conceal the baby. But why would you conceal a baby in a zipped up purse. I really believe this female was up to no good. Only God knows what would have happened if the Police did not stop that Jeep for the cracked windshield. I believe it was divine intervention. God in is infinate mercy rescued this baby from destruction. The lord has something great in store in the future for this new born baby girl.
i dont believe this shit. u doctors better give she and the baby a blood test to c if its her’s or stolen or if she was on her way to kill the baby girl. think cops think deep
life is cheap on St. Croix
Cheap with all the lay offs and pay cut
This is a weird story, why did she keep the baby for that long if she intended to go to the hospital? Then again, why did she zip up the bag if she was intending to take the baby to the hospital, i would think that would be suffocating for the baby. Why do they do these thing to the innocent??? She got to be loco!!!!! Lock she up please!!!
She worse than Beyonce suffocating her “baby” in all them blanket…at least it looks like Beyonce toting around one of those reborn fake babies.
Trust me, now I’ve heard it all, wow…
Some people should be sterilized at birth. History has a way of repeating itself and I’m pretty sure her mother had the same tendencies.
very judgemental!
THIS MUST BE A SICK JOKE!!
WTF?????? She gave birth a week ago and only now going Hospital? Utter RUBBISH!
Actually, she didnt say where she was going. She said the baby has yet to see the doctor. If she was going to the hospital, why not transport the baby in s safe and sensible manner??? Why was the baby in a zipped bag?? Its a good thing the police stopped her cause it seems like she was up to no good. What about her family or others who may have known about her pregnancy?
Nothing to said…thilady cannot be the babys mother no,no,no,
