Although he didn’t get the coveted first place at the August 11 VI Idol competition, congratulations are still in order for local rapper Bumpy or BBreezy who came very close to winning.

Bumpy reportedly tied at first place during the competition with St Croix’s Idol finalist Kendra who eventually won. The tie was broken by online voting which saw Kendra collecting more votes than the BVI artiste.

Bumpy was one of five local artistes who were selected to face off against 10 of their US Virgin Islands counterparts in a quest to become the next VI Idol on August 11 at the Reichold Center in St. Thomas. The other BVI finalists were Monique Chapdelaine, McKenzie Baltimore, Hashim Lewis, and (duo) PG13.

The local five were selected following what can be dubbed a stiff competition on Saturday, July 14 at UPs Cineplex.

During the competition, Chapdelaine attained the highest score after she earned a high 10-point rating from all of the five judges for her rendition of “Heaven Must have Sent You.” Renowned artiste Baltimore earned second place with 49 points after he smoothly delivered his hit “Inseparable”, while wearing a swaggerific outfit that the judges applauded.

The two rappers that make up PG-13 earned 48 points for their performance and had the audience laughing with their funny lyrics. They were also commended for their hype and energy by the judges. Hashim got rave reviews from the judges for his choreographed performance and his snazzy outfit while local rapper Breezy sang two of his popular tunes, and also impressed in his ensemble.

Alvin “Alico” Marks of LP Entertainment said that the show is a means of promoting Virgin Islands talent and he was pleased that BVI talent was also going to be on display.

“We did this out of love… There is not enough avenue to showcase the Virgin Islands talent… Our mission is to showcase your talent so this year it’s the five best from St. Croix, Tortola and St. Thomas,” he explained.

The VI Idol prize includes $3,000 cash prize, a 10-song album, a music video to be produced in high definition, a cellular phone and the VI Idol trophy, as well as various gift certificates.

The qestion in which i will like to ask the judges is if the dress code plays a big role in the competion, or is it just the lyrics.I hope the person/s in charge of the competition would have mentioned all these guidelines or stipulations to follow in order to prevent an artist from loosing numerous points.Maybe they didn’t and maybe; just maybe that’s why joung Jeezy, oh sorry BBreezy lost by unanimous decision.I wouldn’t really hate on Breezy for his attire because that is what he knows. He is influenced by all these famous rap artist who made it big time, so therefore obviously he want’s to be somewhat like them.
I didn’t get to attend to the competition, but i saw highlights of it on our local tv station. Good luck next time Breezy. I am sure you will win it next time. You just have to inquire about all the guidelines of the competition. When you make it big you could always flex in what attire you choose to wear. One nigga!

I am always happy when a young people do well in this life, and I will always encourage them to shoot for the stars. However, I must say I find it quite troubling to see some young men shirtless and showing their underpants. This is no fashion statement in my mind. It’s ridiculous and offensive to my eyes and many others.

Young people should know that in this larger world, if you truly want to go places, they should always try to conduct themselves appropriately, and that includes the way they dress and act, and by all means pulling their darn pants up, and not showing their asses literally. And while they are at it, putting on a shirt would be nice. Your achievements would not be diminished, but rather enhanced.

So while I congratulate Breezy and others, I would like to say to Breezy and all like him: Pull your darn pants up! No one wants to see your drawers! Be a better role model. Trust me Breezy; you will get further in this life should you accept this one piece of advice from an older man like myself who understands how the real world works. Not trying to rain on your parade. I’m just trying to spread a little sunshine. So Breezy if you are reading, think about what I suggest. I mean you well, and congratulations.

I bet if these young guys knew the reason men started wearing their pants like that they wouldnt be so quick to do it!! I understand it originated in mens prison and guys that wore their pants like that showing their underwear were signalling they were available, i leave the rest to your imagination!!

Some sayy necklaces and chains and footchains originated from slave collars and chains, but. I am sure you have one around your neck right now! Breezy’s outfit is just a part of entertainment of today. He is trying to make it in a business that applauds such dress. He doesnot dress like that every day and is a very humble and quiet dude. So wase up!

When LL Cool J or D’angelo takes off their shirts to sing, I bet you didn’t have a problem. DMX, Ludacriz, Tupac, etc all wear sagging baggy jeans and its not a problem. Breezy is just wearing the style and unfiform of todays rappers. H is just portraying the image he has to? There was a time when bell-bottoms was a huge problem for parents, as was the flattop or even braids! Today we see those styles as harmless but back then they were the signs of a renegade or rebel. Young people’s styles will never be accepted by the older crowd or parents. Doesn’t mean these kids are bad or not good role models!
