Leon King, who was arrested in January on money laundering-related charges, had his bail varied in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, February 27.

The magistrate’s decision came following earnest pleas by Herbert McKenzie, the attorney of the 31-year-old boat captain from Cane Garden Bay. In the end the defendant was granted bail in the sum of $40,000 cash.

McKenzie told the court that his client was having a hard time coming up with the necessary funds to make the previous bail offer. The lawyer also presented a doctor’s letter which stated that his client would be taking an operation soon. McKenzie told the court that he believed remand might be a hindrance to certain aspects of his client’s operation.

Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham pointed out that bail was at the discretion of the court, but he did object to the request made by McKenzie. Graham said a time was not specified in the doctor’s report and the prison has the facility and means to assist King in his pre and post-surgery recovery.

King was charged in relation to the $136,000 found in his boat and pleaded not guilty on January 27 to the charge of acquisition, possession or use of proceeds of criminal conduct.

He was granted $200,000 bail at that time, half of which was to be paid in cash.

LOL. Magistrate Tamia Richards is a mess.

As per her, “anyone who is found in possession of $136,000 and more in cash, has more money, and she is therefore ONLY asking for $100,000 cash.” Not a check but hard cash. Well, who would have thought she would be so tough. Good for her.

She sounds like my kind of magistrate who knows how to make a serious bargain. I would hate to be before her on child support issues. With that kind of thinking, I would be out of gas. LOL. Anyway, I like her toughness.

Nothing in life is free. A lot of younger people are so greedy these days. The thing is that when you choose to do what is against the law you are on borrowed time because eventually you will get caught. Is it worth it? Not in my mind. I’d rather have my freedom, my family and my friends than bling and cars and anything flashy to show off to my fake friends who don’t give a damn about me. Thing is this guy was a captain. He could make a decent living running tourists around the islands. If he needed more income he could have gotten work at one of our many charter businesses. Dumb decision Leon! Hope the trade of the years in jail for the cut in the money you ran is worth it.

Good job RVIPF! Keep up the good work. There are more perps out there like poor Leon. And there is more work to do on this case. FOLLOW THE MONEY! What other asessets does Leon have? Where did they come from? How much money is hidden under his mattress? Who are his known associates? Let’s get some warrants and search all of their houses, cars, boats and planes. We can resolve the deficit in no time! We should cooperate with the DEA and export as many of these punks as they will take.

Wow… 136 Gran. Imagine that. That’s a lot of cash to be sailing around with in a little black bag. Here you have a 31 year old with a large sum of cash who apparently could not account for it nor bother to declare it.

Obviously based on the charge of Acquisition, Possession or Use of the Proceeds of Criminal Conduct, we can safely assume that criminal conduct in all likelihood involves illegal drugs, and this person was a courier of sorts. Additionally, it looks like law enforcement did not find any drugs in their possession, thus explaining the absence of any drug charges.

Which raises these questions: What was this guy thinking? Wasn’t he paying attention to the stepped up effort by law enforcement relative to this kind of crime? Wasn’t he paying attention when that big drug bust involving the DEA went down last year?

Right now, there are 5 men facing extradition to the U.S. in February for similar/related activities. I gather some people are rather bold, don’t think they will get caught, or simply don’t care. Well, the RVIPF seems to be sniffing them out one by one, and I say kudos to them for a job well done. It’s up to the Director of Public Prosecution to secure a conviction.

When I read these stores, it is indeed sad that so many young men are getting caught up in this kind of activity. Nevertheless, sadness aside, I hope they are prepared to do the time since it appears they have no fear committing the crime.

@ Slick black, got of Ray’s case, he doesn’t have anything personal against the guy nor is he rejoicing that he was caught,he’s just speaking his mind and sharing his opinion about the situation, if the guy that was caught was into something illegal then he must be held accountable for his actions, the news says he is 31 not 13 so therefore he more than knows right from wrong, as do you, well i hope atleast,so stop looking blogging beef with Ray, and see the story for what it is..Keep smiling

Yes, indeed, very sad to see young people looking to take the easy way out. But sadder still that somehow as a society we seem to have neglected young people by not teaching them the lost value of hard work and diligence, and by not investing in education and in creating job opportunities. We, especially young people, don’t seem to appreciate how lucky we are.
Lastly, whatever punishment is meted out, it will not be anything like the punishment for a crime of this magnitude in the US, so Mr. King is indeed lucky in that respect, just as he is that it probably was not his money to lose in the first place.

Thank you for the funds Leon, every penny seized through illegal activity that ends up in the public kitty helps! The sale of the boat will help add a little bulk to the public coffers too!

Rest assured the money will be put to good use. Perhaps more CCTV cameras strategically placed somewhere in Soper’s Hole ~ in your honour of course?

You think it’s only white posing as tourists, nope i’m sure it has some black men involved, while the focus and attention is on the white men, the black under cover cops are the ones seeing and knowing.

The way how I see it is keep out of them things because you can’t work alone and you don’t know who to trust, because nowadays you don’t really know who’s who.

And I do believe that the prison here needs to get hardcore because they see it as a hotel stay basically, they need to make it so much so that when they’re time of release comes they won’t want to ever do anything again that would land them back there. And encourage the free birds to fly high and don’t end up in a cage like them.

    Boss,
I know you’re trying to be funny, but if money and drugs is gonna run things under-ground like 6 ft, then we don’t need em. If he’s an honest businessman, then he would come through the proper channels, and declare his cash.
