An accident involving two vehicles resulted in the death of retired police officer and former political candidate Maxwell Smith Sunday evening in West End.
Smith of Sea Cows Bay was one of three persons in a vehicle travelling east when it collided with another travelling west.
BVI News understands that Smith was the driver and the other two occupants of his Toyota SUV were his wife and son.
Reports say the impact sent Smith’s vehicle into the sea in the vicinity of Penn’s residence and Zion Hill junction.
His wife who was apparently unhurt tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m.
A man from the Dominican Republic is now in police custody.
This was the first fatal traffic fatality of 2012. Police are investigating.
BVI News will have more information as it comes to hand.

Tola has to enforce seatbelts to be worn at all times
Could it be that a seatbelt had him strapped in that’s why they couldn’t get him out in time? Please comment with sense especially at times like these!
Condolences to his fam especially Travica and Travonie whom I went to school with. I can’t imagine what you’re going through at this time…stay strong!

R.I.P MAX
i was personally there to that accident and those boy got him out of the water the ambulance was already alerted before he had came out and unbelieveablly our emergency system we have here took nearlly an hour to reach there and then when they came it was to fire truck that came and fifteen minutes after it was the ambulance. Why in the world if people call 911 and tell them, that they was an accident and a man was drowning, why ini God’s name are you going to send a fire truck to give the man more water that he dont need.
MY CONCLUSION is the he did because of the AMBULACE Taking so long to reach and they should be ASHAMED of them selfs
God help ayo and R.I.P MAX you will not be forgetten and my condolences to the family keep your head up
When you dial 911 I believe the call goes through the Fire Station. In addition, the fire officers are also trained in EMT.
Dear RIP MAX
Sorry to say, but the Fire Service has the equipment (jaws of death) to remove a person from a wreck, the need to respond to the scene as part of the EMS service. They are also trained in CPR etc.
I agree our Ambulance service not acceptable.
As a previous blogger stated, we should have ambulances both in the western and eastern areas.
Because like anywhere in the world these additional things cost money are you willing to have to have people stationed and pay them for being idle??? Lets put a hospital in East End and West End stationed with a doctor and a surgeon each while your at it and give them the hundred thousand dollar equipment needed at each location also. It is easy to talk xyz but undertand what comes with it.
Very good point and thank you for posting this comment. So worrying and unacceptable. This is serious matter. What will it have to take for a change…?
I agree. The island is small enough that an ambulance should reach it’s destination within 10-15 minutes. What is the reason for the long delays. Even the Canadian man who died Christmas with his family rushing him to meet the ambulance. That is ridiculous! The EMT’s should be ready to go at a split second the call comes in. I understand the 911 calls go through to the Fire Station currently? What’s up with that? 911 means emergency and requires immediate response. The police, the hospital, the 911 dispatcher, the Government all should be held accountable for people who die because of shoddy emergency response system. The Government should be paying compensation to the victims families and apologizing profusely.
No one could ever do enough for you ungrateful people! do you know the exact details? the TRUTH! The fire truck had to go also because the depth of the situation was unknown. You so critical!
H
A fire truck was on the scheme because the officers are trained EMT ALSO. You peopel just find fault with everything.
To actually see exactly how his accident took place just to terrifying and now to hear he is dead R.I.P. Mr. Smith
Please ease up on the DR man, accidents happen
uuummmmm……you are the first comment to mention it.
Condolences to Mr Smith’s family and friends.
I wasnt there and dont know exactly how this accident happened but inquiry minds would like to know which one of the two vehicles were under excessive speed????? How did an eastbound vehicle get hit by a vehicle going west and the eastbound one end up on the right hand side of the road, bottom up in seawater???????
I was just wondering that as I was driving home today
That area is a death spot. Arent speed bumps there to stop these crazy drivers.rip maxwell
maybe the 14 speed bumps between sea cows bay and to that point in west end are also partly responsible for the lenth of time it took for the ambulance to reach – just saying.
Maxwell was cool spirits.RIP my bro.
very sad
i am so sad.
This is so sad! Things like this reminds us that life is fragile and while we are here on earth we must do our best to live good with everyone and prepare for the inevitable. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Smith and family. May the peace of God be with you in this difficult time.
What a waste of a good life. A death that was so avoidable if the police did their job in controlling reckless and dangerous driving
Too true. We all want the privilege of driving, but many just wantonly disregard traffic laws. Take a look for yourself next time: people exceed speed limits all the time, pass on blind curves, talk on the phone (including government plates), and we have more vehicles than ever before etc, etc. Two years ago, the news posted more than 300 accidents in less than a year!
the people with the worst vehicles..drive the fastest.. with no regard for other motorist…they are driving some broke down suzuki, and you are in your nice jeep that you work so hard for.
RIP Mr. Smith
PEOPLE IN OLD BROKEN DOWN VEHICLES WORK HARD FOR IT ALSO
To: “Right” you are sooo true and they are usually the ones if they hit you they do not have two cents to scatch their a$$ with….
It is indeed sad when you pass judgement on each others simply because of where their from. The so called broken down vehicle is a blue rental which seemed new to me. It is truly unfortunate when anyone looses their life and believe me, I was praying very hard for him to live and be well but it’s not always the surviver that is to blame. I heard the impact and saw Max’s car lost control and flipped into the sea. There were no brake marks on the road and the blue pickup was stopped at place of impact. Does that sound like he was speeding to you? Let’s not play the blame and hate game please. We are all people here, none from Mars or some other far away planet, we are all from God” earth! Not our own! My heartfelt condolences to his family! May the peace of God be yours through this tring time. To his wife, you did an outstanding job in your fight to resuscitate your husband. Gods grace be with you and yours!
Based on how you going you soon start blame God himself. Blame sir is not important and will not return Mr. Smith. Try and offer a solution and be a part of it honour his journey change with a deed to HELP not hurt. Police are not onmipotent help them not hurt them!!
Blame imbecile helps address issues so tragedies don’t repeat themselves…
my deepest condolences to the smith family, Mr smith was like a father to me,his son Maxwell JR like a brother to me.during my adolescence he provided me with great counselling you will be deeply missed.
Sorry for speculating cause i am not sure if the other driver was a male or a female.
My condolences goes out to the immidiate family of Mr.Smith, he really was a friendly and good man indeed.I hope the other driver really was not driving with negligence, cause if he was he could be in big…trouble.
This is not the time for people to be arguing about this incident,we need to act more civilize.
Condolences to the smith family. May God comfort you in your time of loss and keep you under the shadow of his wings.
The neighbors dog was howling, so I knew this was a serious accident when I heard the ambulance/fire pass by with their sirens blaring.
How do dogs know when someone has died or is going to die?
I have no idea how they know, but they sure bet know.
It is so sad to hear of Bro Maxwell passing this evening. He was a great guy, we worked together as POLICE OFFICERS and shared some good times together. You will be missed by all who came in contact with you.Stay strong Ms Smith and my GOD continue to watch over you and your family.
its not a matter of da other person bad drving……..he had an heart attack or some sort of organ failure while driving
Because your hungry a$$$ already do the autopsy. A pity some of you all can’t get a heart attack of you all d*** mouth….
Mr. Smith was very helpful to me a few years ago when my bicycle broke down and he gave me a ride. He took me out of his way to my home. We had a lovely conversation and I knew from that little time together that he was an exceptional man. My sincere condolences to his family.
