UPDATED: Tofficah Thompson passes away; driver not charged

The pedestrian struck down by a vehicle over two weeks ago near the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College died this morning at Peebles Hospital.
Hospital officials confirmed that Tofficah Thompson, 22, died around 8:50am as a result of complications due to injuries sustained in the accident. She had been in critical condition at the hospital since the accident.
Thompson was crossing the Blackburn Highway in the vicinity of the College after 8pm on April 13 when she was struck by a vehicle traveling east. She was transported by ambulance to Peebles Hospital and was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
The driver has not yet been charged in the incident.
A blood sample, taken from the driver to determine alcohol and/or drug levels, is still being analyzed as investigation into the collision continues.

WoW!! It was just Christmas 09 When my cousin say to me., “This is my Girlfriend Tofficah”. She was so pretty and smiling and full of life. She was blushing and grinning. I am at a loss for words……………………………………To her Family, I offer my deepest condolences at the loss of Your Angel, may She rest in Peace.

Like several of us has shared many months,years before…..STREET LIGHTS are much needed throughout the island (tortola) roads. Driving at night is rough, tough and trying as a visitor bad enough for the local folks…why can’t they take time to install the proper lighting throughout the islands roads??? such incident as cause because of careless planning by those in charge of such a need…staying back in the days when folks replied upon donkey, mules, cart and bulls (walking) to get to and from are long gone and better must be doen for the people living on those islands….the people of the islands need to speak up and speak out and ask for what is much needed (STREET LIGHTS)…..speed bumps can help slow the car down but the lights will allow drivers and residents to feel safe…..even the roads need the divider lines to be redone on certain areas (like going towards (sea cows bay) and around the bend towards Big Ben Grocery store…..we don’t have to live there to notice what is needed, so please pay attention and take into consideration that we are in 2010 and more STREET LIGHTS will help…..think about it!! better still JUST DO IT….many lifes will be safe…..thanks,

Something must be done about the crossiing at HLSCC. Every little school has a speed bump, but not here. Cars speed down this stretch of road for passing. Even bright lights and big signs would help. A cross walk signal perhaps the best.

im not a friend of toff but she lives a house away from me up long trench ,whenever i see her in the morning i would give her a ride and we would talk all the way to town ,i knew her dad for years i told her ,she even told me,he always talk to her about staying home and not getting into trouble here ,new york and jamaica she always tell him she will be fine,she even said she would be going to ja in august .so so sad my condolences to the family ,toff u will be missed

For a country with an annual budget of over 250 million dollars a year, there must be a good reason for not being able to analyze a simple blood alcohol test on the island. It certainly does not speak well of the Police’s ability to deal with potentially drunken drivers, since almost every other countries police force has the equipment to do a breath test available in every police car. Once again, the Police come up lacking in training, skill and knowledge. When will this change???

I watched this story all day. Read it countless times today. I looked at the facebook posts and I chose not to believe that this could be true. I avoided the topic because in my mind It just could not be true. But night has set in and the news stays the same. Reality has finally set in and Tofficah is gone. Though we weren’t close we were classmates. It’s hard when the people that grow up with you are taken away from you so suddenly. My prayer is that her closest family and friends find comfort in the arms of the Almighty through this trying time. Tofficah your outspoken ways, loud voice, laughter and creative one of a kind fashion sense will truly be missed. You are gone but you will never be forgotten by those that love you.

It is sad to hear such a news. Miss Thompson was pluck out from this world early. These drivers should use commonsense and have consideration for other road users. B.V.I, let us rise up. We are a little island and we don’t have long distances to travel, why we are in such a hurry. If the drivers do not change their attitudes, we will have worst accidents. It’s very hard to accept the reality of what has occured and i’m deeply saddened with this news. My heartfelt condolences to my boy Jerry and the rest of the family. I can’t imagine the grueling pain you must be experiencing but lean on Jehovah God and he will see you through. He never permits us to go through more than we can handle and even though it will be hard to move forward you can count on him for the strength and support you will need. I don’t wish to start a blame game here, as this is not the time nor is it appropriate, but I trust there will be an opportunity for us to address how this tragedy could be averted in the future, why this young lady was not medivaced to a better facility earlier on to increase her odds of survival, and how we can better treat these kinds of patients if a similar incident was to happen in the future. Again, may she RIP. Drivers and pedestrians, please use due caution when using the roads.
Your concerns are shared as this is truely a tragedy, however in order for someone to be transported out of the BVI, they must first be in stable condition for the receiving hospital to accept them. They must also have insurance prior to the receiving hospital accepting them and they must also have some type of evacuation coverage, either with their insurance policy or with MASA. I think that why funds were being raised, so that in the event she became stable an evacuation could take place.
May the family hold on to the father for strength.
Let the Minister work urgently to remedy the lack of traffic signals at the HLSCC.
To the drivers who act like they going to out a fire, please be mindful that you are not just driving for yourself, but for all drivers as well as pedestrians.
As someone in the know, I am fully aware that patients need to be stable before they can be transferred to another facility. And by stable I am specifically referring to vital signs. While I am not prevy to what her medical condition was when she entered the hospital, unless her vital signs were very unstable (specifically her blood pressure), a patient is transferable. All other factors can be controlled (unconsciousness with respirtory support etc, blood pressure with meds). I can go on here, but that’s unnecessary.
From experience Ray you cannot move a patient in a critical state, they have to be stable the people in PR/Miami would not take you, because of the Air Pressure from the Aircrafts it would have been to much of a risk.

She is expressing her sorrow for a friend and I for one think that takes priority over dotted i’s and crossed t’s…..For heavens’ sake a young lady lost her life tragically! Her family and close friends and the BVI community are grieving and what makes it worst you ending off your piece by saying “on another note”. Tofficah’s passing is the first, middle and last note.
