Paul Oliver delivers one of his pint size forehands at the Barbados Wilson U14 COTECC circuit games March 24 – 30, 2012.
The recently attended Barbados Wilson U14 COTECC tournament by Paul Oliver (BVI’s no. 1 ranked junior tennis player) posed a threat on the international junior tennis scene during the 24 – 30 March games.
This ITF tournament attracted over 100 hopeful youngsters from 30 countries in and around the Caribbean – whom were all eager to get through the qualifying rounds in order to participate in the main draw. Our BVI ‘s own Paul Oliver was one of those hopefuls.
With great BVILTA local support, constant training and determination, Paul Oliver exceeded all expectations and made it through the qualifying rounds and into the main draw.
IT was commented that the overall standard of tennis was impressive – of which Paul’s contribution was a part. Although Paul did not return home to the BVI with a trophy, trainers, coaches and parents of opponents alike mentioned that Paul will be a threat to their own youngsters in future. “I told my son that this was the boy from the BVI to keep and eye on” said one father – who could not believe the level of improvement which Paul has made even in the space of one year.
This is a “feather in our cap” says president of the BVILTA, Dion Anselm. “This is what we want to hear. We will continue to foster tennis amongst our youngsters and aim to pose greater and bigger threats at international tournaments in the future”.
Paul won his first 4 matches in the qualifying rounds – to be defeated in the first game of the main draw 1-6, 1-6 against Barbados No. 1 ranker Andrew Symmonds. “The score does not do the match much justice” said one on-looker, “it was still nail bitingly exciting at some points in the game and to me they both won as it is sportsmanship that wins overall”.
