L to R - Darel Christopher Jnr (BVI), James Weekes (Nevis), Reggie Douglas (Nevis), Sally Blackmore (BVI)

Fifteen cyclists participated in the St. John Festival Bike Race this morning.

Riders came from as far as Nevis, and also from Tortola, St. Thomas and St. John.  The conditions were perfect for “Classic Course” which hasn’t been used for the past two years due to bad weather and poor road conditions.

This route starts at Cruz Bay and follows Centreline Road to Coral Bay where the turn-around takes the riders back up the hill and then along the North Shore via a steep descent down Kings Hill.  After cycling past Maho, Cinnamon and Truck Bays, the course ends at Hawksnest Bay Beach for the finish and a total of  just over 14 miles and about 2,700 feet of climbing.

From the get go Darel Christopher Jnr (BVI), Reggie Douglas (Nevis) and James Weekes (Nevis) formed the lead group and Majatte (STJ), Millar (STT) and Blackmore (BVI) gave chase.  The rest of the cyclists spread out over the course.  Before the turnaround Douglas had opened up a gap,  However, before the finish  Christopher and Weekes had reeled in Douglas and they all crossed the line with only tenths of a second between them.  Christopher took the win in 1 hour and 2 minutes with Douglas second and Weekes third.  Sally Blackmore was first female and 6th overall in 1:19 with newcomer Margaret Majette taking second and Jude Woodcock third.

All finishers received a participation medal.  Podium places in both male and female were awarded trophies and prize money kindly sponsored by the St. John Festival Committee.  Thanks to Adam and Jane Thill for organizing along with the Festival Committee.

It’s always a pleasure to visit and ride in St. John and catch up with USVI cyclists.  We hope to see you all again, if not before, at the “Three Virgins in Three Days” ride in October.
