International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA)

H. Lavity Stoutt Community College is inviting prospective participants to submit abstracts or posters for the Islands of the World XII Conference, which will be hosted in the British Virgin Islands from May 29 to  June 1 next year.

The deadline for abstract or poster submission is 30 September, while author notification for paper or poster acceptance is 31 December.

The deadline for submission of final papers or posters for inclusion in publications is March 31, 2012.

Abstracts or posters should be sent to [email protected]

Submissions will be subject to “double-blind review,” which involves assessment by two anonymous readers as part of the approval process.

Suggested topic areas for submissions include agriculture, fisheries and conservation; health, social development and philanthropy; financial services, tourism and economic development; entrepreneurship, Caribbean governance and business; alternative energy, sustainable development and climate change; education, literature, history and culture; and information technology and disaster management.

HLSCC is serving as host organisation for the conference, which is held every two years under the auspices of the International Small Islands Studies Association.

The 2012 conference will be held under the theme, “Globalisation: Islands Adapting to Change.”

One of the main objectives is to stimulate discourse on how islands across the globe, and in particular the BVI and the wider Caribbean, are adapting to the changes of 21st century globalisation.

The conference also hopes to place island nations around the world in a better strategic position by empowering them to face pressing issues on the global stage, having participated in such an international forum.

The involvement of HLSCC as conference host will present research funding opportunities, exposure for researchers, and the potential for networking for international and local participants.

Further, the College will be presented with a forum to collaborate with Government and the wider community on nation-building activities.

The event will also bring with it exposure for the territory through global marketing opportunities and media coverage, thereby creating greater awareness of the BVI’s products and services to the international community.

Participants are expected to include ISISA members, scholars and practitioners from across the Caribbean and beyond, officials from the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, ministers of government, hoteliers and small property owners, and students and faculty from educational institutions.

ISISA is a voluntary, non-profit and independent organisation. Its objectives are to study islands and to encourage free scholarly discussion on small island related matters, such as insularity, dependency, resource management, the environment, and the nature of island life.

For more information about the submission of abstracts or posters, please contact Lecturer at HLSCC and Chair of the Conference Steering Committee Dana Lewis Ambrose, email [email protected]
