Second District Representative Alvin Christopher believes the Virgin Islands Protocols for Financial Management should be subjected to a debate in the House of Assembly.
“Today, we had the premier lay on the table a very important document in the life of the people of these islands namely so the Protocols of Financial Management. It was long in coming and I do believe that the impact it is going to have on these territories, I think we owe it to the people to set a date where we can debate this document so that the people of the territory can have a very good understanding, and hear all sides on what the territory is up against as it refers to this document,” Christopher announced during the ‘other business’ section of the May 10 sitting of the House of Assembly.
Christopher said the document is good in some cases but it is very complex in many other ways, and therefore needs to be discussed publicly so that the people of the Virgin Islands could understand where the territory is going from a financial management perspective.
“I know my colleague from the Seventh and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour (Dr. Kedrick Pickering) is passionate about the airport development, and I do believe that this document will have a heavy impact on the way we go about developing the airport, and any development that is going to take place within the territory,” he said.
Christopher added that “some decisions will have to be made in reference to many of the major projects that government is thinking of embarking on in the future. He said “the question is being asked if now is the time for us to embark on the major developments that are being proposed and the impact it would have on our territory going forward”.
“So in discussing the whole aspect of our borrowing and our ability to borrow and repay would also impact the different major projects that we would be able to challenge in the future, and I think that as soon as possible and I think that I would be seeking ways of getting an appointment with you Madame Speaker to have a date set for the debate of this document. In doing that we would be able to discuss in depth some of the major programs and plans, because as this document specifies, we will have to plan our major developments going into the future. So it would provide the opportunity for us to discuss this with our people so that they can have a clear understanding of where we are as a family,” Christopher noted.

I have investigated this matter and it is crystal clear that we have signed off on an agreement which subjects us to tighter controls than hither to. Our ability to borrow has also been restricted to just a few millions.
Tilford has gotten us into this mess which will take many years to recover from. You may now understand why all the bla bla bla about Airport expansion is nothing more than hot air.
It start from 2006. do some more investigation. i really don’t think you mean to be bias.
Tighter controls are NOT such a bad thing. It ensures that we either stay in line or pay the price. WTF is wrong with you people? Why do you think we don’t have bankruptcy and foreclosures on the scale of other countries? TIGHT RESTRICTIONS! That’s what’s needed. I’m glad they signed it as well.
VIP couldnt get their $15mil from CDB before these restrictions, let’s bet NDP will get that money? Who wants to bet? Being big bad and ignorant gets you nowhere. all the bad they were UK tell them they can’t get that money and they sat like little lambs. Now the real government is doing whats required and they will get that money. Any takers?
ALl of the voters of this country should be glad to find out that UK has a tighter grip on us which means our politicians must perform or face the heat. what is so wrong with that? it’s any wonder why millions and millions were allowed to leak out under both parties? it’s time someone looked over us, too much bs man. BVI was supposed to have enough reserve to take us through the storms. instead we have treasury fighting to make payments, juggling every month.
