Classical saxophonist to perform at next HLSCC concert

HLSCC - Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 at 12:03 AM

Twenty-six-year-old American classical saxophonist Ashu is slated to perform at the next H. Lavity Stout Community College concert at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium on Saturday 10 March at 8:00 p.m. He will be accompanied by Kuang-Hao Huang on piano.

Ashu has continually defied conventions, winning major international and national competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists.  He made his recital debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall in New York and, at age 16, his concerto debut at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Since then, his performances have taken him throughout the United States and Europe.

With a dynamic style that captivates audiences and a repertoire, ranging from original works by Ibert and Debussy to his own arrangements of Piazzolla and Morricone, Ashu has shown that the concert saxophone can reach beyond stylistic categorisation and to a large diversity of people.

His playing has been described as “riveting” and “brilliant” by the National Public Radio’s Performance Today host and “just as much fun to watch him as it is to listen to him” by the Dallas Morning News.

Born and raised in California, Ashu has won first prizes at numerous competitions, including the International Heida Hermanns, the International Kingsville Wind Instrumentalist, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the Houston Symphony Concerto. He graduated from Northwestern University and is currently based in Chicago.

Tickets for the concert are $20 each, available from LIME, HLSCC Bookstore, Sunny Caribbee, Road Town Bakery and UMI Fashions; or call 852-7223. LIME and FirstBank Virgin Islands are platinum sponsors of the College’s Performing Arts Series.
