The management of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) is in discussion with a number of entities as it tries to raise funds through contract training locally and regionally.
President of the college Dr. Karl Dawson declined to disclose the specific training areas, but said contract training is one of the measures being considered to make up for a recent cut in government’s subvention.
“We are seeking more things like contract training. We are in discussion with a number of agencies that we expect to be able to provide some of those training services for both locally and we continue to try to do so within the region as well,” he told BVI News.
The National Democratic Party administration last year slashed its subvention to the HLSCC by roughly 10%.
Dr. Dawson had disclosed that the subvention was reduced from $11,675,000 in 2012 to $9,960,800 this year; a difference of $1,714,200.
The college Principal stated that, apart from contract training, other initiatives being considered include grant funding and fundraisers.
“We expect to try to deploy more resources in the area of grant funding as best as we could to obtain whatever money out there by means of grant funding.
“We have started to do more in the area of fund raising, though I would hasten to say it is not something that happens overnight. You have to build the relationships, build the structures in order to really have a sustained and successful fundraising machinery,” he said.
Dr. Dawson also expressed confidence that the college will eventually survive despite the reduced subvention which government said was an austerity measure.
“I am confident about going forward because I believe that the leadership of this country realizes that the growth and development and success of this territory relies on the growth and development and success of the people, and that the college is a key part of that machinery to help our people to advance.”

ndp is trying hard to kill the same college that lavity built…the same college where the celebrations and fancy speeches were diplayed
It’s time the college stand on its own. We all know the wastage that is going on up there. We have 10 people doing the job of 3. Everybody helping themselves to the inventory of the stores etc. Don’t let me talk all on this site. Our own people raping the country. The Government had a right pull the plug on it. Stopping the bakery and cutting subvention are good moves. How do you expect the college to take things to the next level when all they do is lie on their laurels with their hands out waiting for sure government money? No institution can operate like that.
It seems as if you know how an institution should operate, therefore with your criticism give suggestions also. Just dont blah because you can type. I’m sure they will listen to your brilliant ideas. Everyone is reading the blogs.
The college have many overpaid staff who should be giving the SUGGESTIONS! Too many of them are sitting down and not producing enough work, if they were giving meaningful SUGGESTIONS the institution would not be in the state that it is now.
Even if you give suggestions they will not listen. They will only listen to members in the clique.
