An Eighth District resident has congratulated the government and the representative Marlon Penn for the work done so far in addressing the problems in the territory and the district since forming the government, but she said it’s time for the Eighth District to have its first commercial bank.
“You talked about getting a major clinic in the area and that is wonderful, but we also want to see things like perhaps getting a bank in this area because some of us who work in the Seventh and Eighth Districts, I work at the college and it’s hard to keep running to town to get those kind of services,” she said.
The resident also felt that more should be done to document the history of the Eighth District.
“You talked about the cultural programmes. I was really glad to hear about that as well and the Resource Centre, but based on some of the work I have been doing at the college, I want to throw out this idea that we have a Virgin Islands Studies Programme, and a lot of times students from the private, the high schools, and even the community, come and ask for information on our history. Just the other day we were asked for information on the Beef Island Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the history behind it, and what I try to say to some persons, that if nobody writes about these things we won’t have it. And one of the projects I am thinking of doing is to go out in our community and interview those persons that will have the history and know about these various landmarks, so perhaps that is a project that not just the culture but the history of our community. Those are the things I will like to see us do and we can start that kind of project,” the resident said.
In response, Eighth District representative Marlon Penn said they have started documenting the history of all the landmarks in the community and assistance is coming from environmentalist Bertrand Lettsome.
The resident congratulated Penn and the Seventh District representative Dr. Kedrick Pickering for their efforts to get things done to improve the districts. She also congratulated Penn for forming a District Council, and said she is willing to be part of this council to do whatever she can to improve the community.

About the same done here in East End as Auntie Dancy….nothing much.
“pack ah bullshit i say”
Marlon made a lot of promises he can’t keep and when you try contacting he’s ignoring your call but it’s only four years enjoy it while it last boo. We shop already to replace you so election time don’t look for me.
The history of the VIs is already documented by such individuals as Ermin Penn, Jenny Wheatley, Verna P Mall, Vernon Pickering, Quincy Lettsome, and the list goes on. Also a social studies book was published to be used in schools. What government should do is assist the individuals get their books published and commission those individuals to publish a history book and workbook to use in primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
Don’t you worry, Marlon will soon promise then a place in heaven.
pure assishness
The history of the bvi needs to start from primary school. The world history and caribbean history should be in high school. We dont need more history classes at HLSCC.
No sensible bank or businessman will put a bank much less atms in crime-infested east end
go haul yu ** must be your butt thats infested. crime is everywhere in the BVI not only east end. stupes
put a next bank up there to to be robbed again?
An ATM service centre incorporating all the banks is what’s needed.
Makes no sense have a bank because the majority of residents work in town.
another pie-in-the-sky dream
The banks certainly can do a better job on strategically placing ATMs and offering more services around the island. It is is crazy that in 2012 if you want banking services you have to travel all the way to Road Town. Most people do not have time to go to the banks on the week days (because they are working, travelling and tending to other pressing matters) and as such they need to be more accomodating in offering services on the weekend, in more locations, and around the clock. Further, it is not everything that can be done online and there is still nothing like face to face meetings.
Kudos to Firstbank VI who at least offer banking services on the weekends as opposed to getting none or having to sit for hours at a time in a drive thru and being limited to one to two transactions in the case of Banco Popular.
