“Crabs in a barrel” mentality hurting Music Fest – letter writer

Dear Editor: As a concerned BVIslander I must say I am quite upset with how things are going in the Territory. We are fighting our own people because we refused to get rid of the ‘crab in the barrel’ mentality.
The Music Festival is a prime example of greed. Call it what you will and say what you want Frank Mahoney brought the Fest from a small initiative to where it is today. And a next thing the first few years were free and many great acts graced the stage.
Close to the 10th anniversary a new committee took away the organization of the Fest out of the hands of Mahoney and his committee because he wanted the move the fest to a controlled environment.
Now the same set of people who kicked Mahoney out is doing the same d** thing. BULL!!!! HYPROCRITES, MONEY GRABBERS – these are the people who said it was not all about money.
I ain’t a fan of Mahoney and trust me I ain’t a fan of Pops either, but right is right.
You can’t kick a man out and turn back and do crap.
If that is the case bring back Mahoney; at least he would have given us a better line-up, not the crap that committee members are trying to push down our throats.
Hmmm I wonder what Alvin Christopher is thinking right now.

St. Kitts Music Festival (SKMF) is alive and well – 14 years strong. We have brought world class genres of music to the Caribbean. It was never about ‘young’ artistes. It was always about promoting the Caribbean, especially St. Kitts as a mecca for music. As the music scene evolves, so does the St. Kitts Music Festival in order to ensure that the patrons are well satisfied year after year. Our festival is about satisfying the varied music tastes of its patrons. We have had DMX but we have also had Hugh Masakela and Air Supply.. There is a website (stkittsmusicfestival.com) and a busy facebook fan page. Over 13 acts have been confirmed. If your favourite artiste does not come this year, hope it will be next year or the year after that. Support these festivals whether they are in St. Kitts or the BVI… St. Kitts has had overwhelming support from the region, especially the BVI and I hope it will continue…
Yes this is very very sad no matter how you think about it, it seems not much thought went into this year’s Music fest, Promoters talk Tough economic times, but once again the so called INternational artists who dont seem to be worth Spit (expt for our boy Iyaz) will get the Lion’s share of our BVI’s Money and the Artists who stand firm and support this Tough economy are being offered $300/$500 wow this is sad, how do u justify paying someone $50,000 and our own people cant even see an ounce of what we work so hard for in this place.. just sad reallly really Sad.. the truth will come to light, dont worry they talk about last year being a good year and once again no Local Artists/ Bands were paid anything. even when asked to drop their prices to close to nothing… HHMMMMM
this year no fest for me …………..not worth the plane ride. With all the mad people the bad vibes have overshadowed the good ones. when its done they will just have another place to drop off the cruise ship people and park the bus and taxies………or new vendor space the govt can tax and by the way who owns the property where the trees are being cut down ? If I lived in CGB I too would be pissed off , Big Time ! where the sand going to come from for the band area steal it from the beach area ??
At the end of the day……all this talk and fuss will be of now use because half of you that are complaining are the same ones that will put on your high heel shoes with outfits to match and brand new sneakers with hats to match and be there enjoying the festivities whether it be inside the fence or outside the fence. There is nothing else to do other that leave the island and if you aint doing that just come out and enjoy your self and make sure you walk wiht enough money to buy somehting to eat and have have soemone buy you somehting to drink. RELAX AND ENJOY LIFE. When you stress about pitty thing you can’t enjoy the days you have on earth. So you dont come out stay home and be bored or come out and have fun. jeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
hey hey i can see the reason they dont put quito and the edge to play cause just how they anit pay UMI they did not pay QUITO AND THE EDGE either way you all think the people them dont want money too you hired them well pay them too is your own local.

What the government did to Mahoney was dead wrong. Anything that start wrong have to end wrong! Him and his crew gave you a free music fest for three years and the thank you was cutting his throat!

WARNING, WARNING God is revealing in dreams and visions about the security and safety at the Music Fest in Cane Garden Bay. Calling all Intercessors to pray and fast. Some have dreamt about tidal waves, mass destruction’s etc. Please let us pray about the welfare and safety of these islands. We have receive a mandate from heaven, let us hold on to the horns of the altar in Jesus Name. Amen
Where are the Music Fest ads??? Something is obviously cooking. Is the Fest still on?
Cable and wireless is stupid putting 200,000 dollars into this music fest and getting no advertising and bad press. Only one radio station who is also collecting 50,000 getting paid.

I have read with interest the displeasure of so many people concerning the music fest. The first big problem was a mediocre line up of artist now the relocation of the stage. I wonder how many of these same people are willing to send a message to the Committee and just not attend Music Fest? There is strength in numbers ..people need to stop talking well in this case .. blogging and ACT. No sense complaining if the committee not going to listen anyway. Who dont hear will feel…people come together and make your voices heard in a way the committee WILL understand!

Tola have more young than old and the young spend more money so it’s our turn. DON’T NOBODY WANT TO SEE THEM OLD PEOPLE. u old folks need to relax before ayo break a hip. u getting THE SPINNERS (whoever that is) so stop complaining.
The MusicFest is not about locals coming out to party. So really no one cares what the young or the old in the BVI wants to hear. What is important is what the visiting tourists want to hear. They are the ones that are spending the money to keep our country afloat during a time when the country is slow.
So you young person, if you want to party and you want the artists to be more of your liking? Then simply go to the August Festival.
Look at St. Kitts MusicFestival. If it isn’t already dead, it soon will be. They started off with all kinds of “young” artists like DMX….where are they now? Their event is just a few weeks after ours. Heard anything about it lately?
Listen up people. We will not stand for this crazyness. These ….running the show who say theyChristian? Christians so stupid? They are greedy and rude. You watch and see Cane Garden Bay people rise up. Alvin, you were put in charge to do the right ting. Do it, man. This nonsense is not in the residents or businesses of CGB, not to mention the reputation of the BVI to have this controversy. How ingnorant of the commitee and of government to support it. This is making you all look real bad. We can see your true greedy selves. It will adversly effect the country as a whole. How can one self elected committee make decisions for the entire community? The majority of the community is against the move, the cutting down of the trees, being forced to pay to come home or go to work. The whole music fest is a huge inconvenience for we who live and work here. Many residents don’t want to go to the shows. Some just want to go home. Some need to go to work. Now they want to charge to drive into the bay whether you go to watch the show or not? Lord knows we won’t get no sleep listening to all the noise for three days. We gonna be charged to drive to work or home or go grocery shopping? Well sir, we aint gonna pay. Just try and stop ‘all’ a we. We comin together to stand up for our rights. Get ready. We aint takin this sittin down. You think you bad Pops? Al? David? You just fools. You are an emparessment to the people in Cane Garden Bay. And you Mr. Christopher … You are not protecting us citizens who are abiding. And you Brother Mel. How you let your people carry on like so? You supposted to be leading according to the most High. Talk to your brethen. Imagine neighbors treating neighbors so? Shame. It’s a disgrace.
All concerned people. Get together now. They can’t block Cane Garden Bay! It unethical. Residents and employees must have free access to the bay. If we choose to come to the show we will pay. We are not asking to get free passes to the show. But we are not going to pay Pops to come and go to our homes! or work! Government… step in and protect you people. There is only a handful of CGB folks that benefit from the Music Fest. What about the rest a we? We won’t pay to be inconvenienced. Stay tuned…..May God bless us all………And, for God’s sake stop cutting down the trees.

WHA HAPPEN TO OLE SKOOL ARTIST LIKE GLADY’S KNIGHT, KC AND THE SUNSHINE BAND, CHICAGO, TEMPTATIONS REUNION, CHAKA CHAN, TONI BRAXTON,BOY GEORGE, CINDY LAUPER, COOL AND THE GANG, IRENE CARA,KENNY ROGERS,MAXWELL,PHIL COLLINS,TEARS FOR FEARS, TONI, TONY, TONE, PATTI LABELLE Come on Man!!!! These are Artist you could have gotten for the MusicFest this year and trust me they would not have cost a whole lot. Just Pick two any Two and trust me we ole skool folks would have been very satisfied. I MISS THE DAYS OF FRIDAY SOCA, SATURDAY REGGAE AND SUNDAY OLE SKOOL!!! Even KENNY G!!

They are here saying ow they are enclosing the music fest to make profit….well i am going to tell you one thing. you ARE NOT going to make a profit killing music fest like this. You guys have gone way beyond boundry. And everyone is saying it THE LINE UP SUCKS!!! what the hell. And then they going to try and brain wash you by saying oh security and metal detectors and all kinda vybes, um at august fest people still have stupidness on them with all that “security” so dont come with that now. We….well at least I want the old music fest back right now! The freedom of the beach is wants puts the great vybe into the Music Fest. Ever since music fest in 2007 with Wyclef it has been going DOWNHILL and quick too. And now they are cutting trees…now you messing with life to get money….um i dont recall trees having to get cut down when Frank had it. This is the official DEATH OF MUSIC FEST!

Imagine not only is Biggg poppa and others rapping our country while we are fully clothed but they remain so nonchalant about their actions and deeds.
He took it a lil too far with relocating the stage – I mean being in the sand on the beach was iconic to the event. I guess he wants to sit on his front porch and have a bird’s eye view – people today get off on power and greed; and like any addiction just don’t know when to stop.
It amazes me to the point of embarrassment where we can’t have a grand line-up and feel like we’re getting our monies worth while enjoying the show…don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to fantasia, Gyptian, Iyaz and many other of our local acts but we are being bamboozled – I mean when are we going to get to the level of St. Kitts and a few other Caribbean islands that bring out heavy hitters and in such large volume. Yet, we want to carry on like we all that, fronting and stunting; then in an act of attempting to shadow the malice and disgrace, they will quickly revert to lack of funding et al. We did much better the first few music fest events, I can recall the crowds and I miss the days when my friends from abroad would call me year after year with such exuberance before and after each show, now those calls have ceased and all I hear is maybe next year ‘fo sho’.
Maybe instead of trying to tear down the other neighboring islands who deliver consistency in showmanship and crowd pleasers, we should learn a few of their strategies – for one, you can only accomplish such with adequate planning, proper management, true passion for the art and having a sense of integrity and pride.
Got to be someone from CGB write this…get over yourself and pay the money like everybody else man!

Speaking of Money and the New Committee for MusicFest – UMI and the Models are still awaiting payment for last year’s Sunday Night Fashion Show while the Modeling group from St. Thomas with the ladies who wore barely anything and disgraced the entire community were paid even before they made their appearance. This is how we treat our own.
These models shouldn’t be paid a cent anyhow. If anything this should be an expense of UMI as a large advertising stunt. Besides, models running down the runway in bathing suits shouldn’t be part of a music fest. They should be doing it in the day time if they really want to run it.
what the heck if u dont like dont go thats all, yea at some point and time ugotot stand up for what u belive but if ya dont like what they doing stand up and dont go, i dont thats for sure unless i drag out by a friend

hmmm….in that $300.000, $225,000 leaving our economy. Local entertainers get spit on when it comes to what they are told they can get for pay. FRANK, POPS, ARCHER, GOVERNMENT, no matter who running the Music festival same result, the economy still finish last.

this is the tenth anniversary and only frank can organize something that everyone can be pleased with. Mehson i dont understand how these men are thinking, nothing they are saying is making any sense.
What a malay this turn out to be….well, I sure hope those in high position who is sharing the $$$$$$$ reading these comments and concerns of the people in the BVI/TOLA……I am glad to see that folks are taking a stand and speaking up….all the best to the committee, seems as though you guys have your work cut out and your hand full on this one…..man to man is so unjust…but like Bob Nesta Marley say “who the cap fits let them wear it” this time around…..they pointed fingers at Frank but they forgot that “if you spit in the sky it will come back down in your own face”…….music fest soon come, let’s wait and see what happens on those days…..all the best!!

Wrong is wrong and it sends the wrong message to our young people. They should not have stolen this event from Mahoney. I use to see him working like hell even the day of the event!
What does this government say to young people. Build something great for the entire country then we will step in and give the funding for it to one of our political supporters?

I am shock to see such a line up for the BVI Music Fest that cost $300,000 dollars now this is US money not other currency now be honest and tell me if something is not wrong, Pops is christian and a decan in Cane aGarden Bay Baptiste Church the bible said Be not unequally yoked together with unbelivers for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrightteousness and what communication hath light with darkness 2 Corinthians chapter 6 verse 14 Pops needs to go and read and study his bible and stop professing to be what he is not Pops you are not fooling god you are only fooling yourself Pastor Mel you are the pastor for the church you need to speak to your member you should be a roll model for the church and christ to win souls but who and which side are you on is it christ or it is the the money you are after too like many other commtte members i am very disapointed in you Pops i had a lot of respect for you but i lost all respect i am not a fan of Mahorney but he did a better job with the music fest this is a disapointing music fest this year the line up is terrible i would like to see what the August festival line up would be like. They have been cutting tree for two days now! Just cannot understand cutting down all these trees so a VERY FEW can make some $$. Does anyone care what this place will look like on Monday 31st…the day after Pop’s and crew are done collecting their $$. It is pretty amazing to see all the Cane Garden Bay residents with their jaws dropped in shock… I think the anger is building pretty quick. … I wonder if anyone will step in and try and stop this train wreck? I am so sorry to see what is going on here in the bay unchecked…

I have had a close look at the report which was submitted by the new Committee and no where does it say how much Pops and David Archer payed themselves. All it says is there was an over run of $30,000 dollars The internal audit needs to look into this. ….
Ralph, if you released that $300,000 dollars to Pops and David, I would encourage the UK to take away finance from you. It is clear that you have no regard for the public purse and how it is used or abused. $500,000 is given to run the USVI BIG Canival and we are giving those two men $300,000 dollars to provide three nights of entertainment.

They are boosting that 5,000 and more people would come on a day x 3 days = 15,000 people x $20.00 entrance gives a whooping $300,000.00. If my memory serves me right – did they not get 500K last year? Plus 300K collected and they still OVERSPEND 30K above 800K?? They should better hire YOU. — Last week I saw in CGB some nice big new houses. Are they musical buildings????????
What happen to the money cable and wireless which is lime the contract that they had with Frank it was pass to the new community which i think is 250K we forget.

look at how we music fest is going to end, first look at the location of where they putting music fest from off the beach to the road side. I” ve been living here for so long and from what i know music fest is for the beach more space with a lot of excitement, how can we have fun in the dirt to stump our toes and get our feet mash up we want back we music fest where it belong. for all the years i know frank malone he always have a good and enjoying music fest before the day of the fest people done start to talk about the good line up know look at what we have know we cant even say a word bout this all yo killing music fest we want back we music music fest stop the greed and fight of money we all just want back we excitied music fest. Frank we miss you come back and take over back music fest please we begging.
