The BVI Cycling Federation held its first race of the season on Sunday February 19, 2012 and saw some 18 riders participating in the opening race, the BVICF 30-mile Classic.

In what can be described as a good day of racing, riders head out from the start/finish line in front of the West End Police Station, continuing west to Frenchman’s Cay Junction, then east to H. Lavity Stoutt Community College where they turn around and returned to the start/finish for completion for 30 miles.

For the Juniors, however, their race course was shorter and saw them turning back at the Prospect Reef Roundabout and back to start/finish for completion.

The lead pack made up of up to five riders but it was Darel Christopher Junior who broke away seconds before the finish line to claim victory in 1:25:43.
Close on his heels was Orano Andrews who clocked 1:25:44 and Richard Morgan in 1:25:45.

Master rider Hank Veer, also part of the leading pack sprinting in, finished fourth in 1:25:46 with another top form Master Adrian Dale taking sixth in 1:25:47. Hank secured the top spot in his division as well.

Sally Blackmore did not have much competition in her category as the one of two females and finished seventh overall in 1:30:00 and earned her the women’s top spot with Kay Reddy coming in as the second female with a time of 1:43:33.

In the Under 15 division, Junior rider Chadwyn George finished in 1:06:16 to take the top spot with Luwayne Francis in second with 1:06:32.

In the Under 17 category, Barney Nockholds made light work of the short course, clocking 48 minutes with Justin Solomon in second with 50 minutes. The next event on cycling calendar is a Mountain Bike race dubbed the Beef Island Challenge for adults and cadets on March 4. The next road bike race is on March 11 which is a 10-mile Time Trial at Palestina.
