DeCastro to petition gov’t for changes to August festivities

After years of calling for a return to the traditional way of celebrating emancipation here in the BVI, cultural activist Donald deCastro has decided to take further action.

He told BVI News Online that he will send a petition to Minister of Culture Myron Walwyn, seeking to have far-reaching changes to the contemporary August festivities, which he said are being mistaken for carnivals.

deCastro, who hopes to get signatures from persons throughout the territory, has appealed for volunteers to come forward so he can submit the petition before the end of 2013.

He wants assistance from an attorney-at-law as well as persons who will be willing to help distribute the petition throughout the different islands.

“Once I can get an attorney and make this claim in the paper, and volunteers to put out the petition, I would like to start working on it immediately. I am gonna try to get as many (signatures) as I can because I would have to get Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and many people in Tortola,” he said.

“I would like to get the petition signed by the middle of September so we could have it presented to the government before the end of the year because we can’t wait until too late to get it presented.”

deCastro said he has waited patiently for years for the August festivities to again become a decent celebration of the territory’s past.

He said things have not improved. “We can’t continue doing this thing the same way we do it every year; it’s not improving. I am looking to see what is gonna happen this year but as it stands, it’s the same old nonsense.”

deCastro told BVI News Online that he has been receiving good responses in the streets since he mentioned the proposed petition on his Straight Talk radio programme.

He stated that he also read the comments relating to his previous calls for changes to the territory’s emancipation celebrations.

Noting that his calls have been rejected by some bloggers, the activist declared that the petition will be the ultimate test as to whether residents want to see changes to future August festivities.

Say what all you want, but a lot of BVISlanders agree with Mr. DeCastro, they are just afraid to voice their views in this place for their foreign boss and foreign neighbors to hear and get offended.

I for one would welcome a return to a culturally appropriate August celebration that is fit for family participation. Enough of the vulgarity and gyrations, leave that to the nightclubs. And while you at it get rid of the admission charge to the festival village. I never hear more nonsense.

Donald have you ever took part in a festival parade? I have never seen you in the 40 years I’ve live in the VI.
