Not so healthy. * Photo submitted

Dear sir/madam: If anyone is wondering why proper drainage is important in road design and property development, if anyone has ever wondered whether some road cuts should simply not be made because of what are obvious landform slopes down to fragile reef and mangrove systems, then here you can see it: Deep Bay, Virgin Gorda, in the middle of the Oil Nut Bay development and Biras Creek Resort.

Healthy. * Photo submitted

A road that “had” to be approved, but is never used anyways. The green shoreline is on crown land on west shore of bay. The dead mangroves are right beside road on east shore of bay. This bay had the thickest, healthiest mangrove coastline on VG. Half looks ruined now. There goes the fish.

I can only imagine how the nearby reef looks from the runoff. And the developer of Oil Nut who also leases Biras Creek, claims that his place is a green development. The proof’s in the pudding.

Who owns this territory? Not those that live and govern it, because it’s been sold down the river . . .

Regards,
Sad and Furious

Well sah! Planning is absolutely crucial. Government needs to include it’s people. People also have to stand up for their rights: Right to a clean, safe enviroment, free of contamination (a result of bad planning at present); right to be informed thoroughly by government as to the pros and cons of any development; after all you were elected by us and therefore you are responsible for reporting details to us…..Not lies!!! Right to accept or reject any proposal for development in our country despite how much they say it will benefit….this maybe a bit long so I’ll stop now.

People, it’s our place and we have to talk up and say what we feel. Oil Nut Bay has great potential; was handled badly and certainly will have bad results.

I hear the man broke!!!!!! OMG!!!!! With all that land?????
RT you better step in and give your ppl some ah dat land…PPPPLLLLZZZZ!!!!!!

There were NO public meetings for Oil Nut Bay. There was NO Environmental asssessment done. There was NO attempt by the government to force the development to be environmentally responsible. I would suspect that a lot of money changed hands. If the government had checked out the credentials of the guy behind the Oil Nut Bay development then they may have foudn out that he has a pretty bad reputation up in the USA where he came from. And even if there had been public meetings it not much use. Scrub Islands had public meetings but it was still given the go ahead and managed to make an even worse mess that the pessimists had expected. And they also managed to fulfill the prediction that they would run out of money. given the sort of traffic that goes over there – its about a 1 star resort pretending to be something else. Its a disgrace and so it Oil Nut Bay.

I don’t live or vote there but I spend money to visit. Hoping to notify Vislanders about how this rarely glimpsed, yet biologically rich area has suffered from irresponsible actions.

If you think this is bad you should have seen Leverick Bay during the last downpour. A Z-shaped road has been cut just behind and to the west of Leverick Bay’s restaurant and bar. There were no culverts, no drainage system and no where for the water to go. Jumbies beach bar and beach were completely washed out. Cars in the car park were flooded and the bay was soon a muddy brown. The muddy water extended almost to Mosquito Island. The sad thing is that the road goes nowhere. What folly!!

The government is always allowing real estate developers to sell out our country and destroying our environment in the process. We need a cap on how much land foreigners can buy in the territory. Foreigners are buying hundreds of acres of BVI land and reselling one acre for $1 million dollars, what is going on in the BVI. Now because of the NDP, the Beef Island Developers have (663 acres) of Beef Island land to resell if they see fit. I really hope that there is a new party running next election one that will look out for BVI citizens and BVI land. It seems that NDP and VIP have the same head when it comes to these matters ‘ it’s all about business’.

We the little man always get the worse. Those who come with the big money does fool off our leaders and make them believe that their development will bring a lot to the bvi. From Necker to Littlle Dix not excluding Bitter End to Peter all over done gone already. It is time that our leaders who govern the departments that give approval, to step up and stop the blah blah nonsense.

Truth, you ain’t know half the truth. Or do you?

Nuff BAD PLANS have been approved over the last 40 years. Nuff people have been dis enfranchised. Where were you and now that you making ref to plans, how are you helping the people with your plans. They are yours? Right?

As far as projects like this being brought to the public, that is just not true.

Just look at the Greenhouse project at South Sound. It was never brought to the attention of anyone and the mud/silt runoff has ruined South Sound, which is a fishery protected area. As far as I know there is no environmental statement/evaluation of the project.

It is sad that this project did not have the correct oversight to make sure no damage was done to the environment. I understand that this project has now been stopped, but the damage has already been done

To the concerned person who made the comments. If you are so concerned I suggest that you take some steps(in the appropriate manner) to address those concerns. First off I think that large developments like this are usually brought forward to the public first or those that it may affect. Werent any meetings held? In addition I do not think that planning authorities would approve any development that would affect the marine life or the people of the virgin islands. Also, if you want to continue to pursue your concern, you can view the plans at town and country and put this information together and take it to the people if necessary.
