“Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” - Proverbs 22:28
I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel abroad.
One of the interesting things about visiting another country is noticing how certain everyday tasks are done.
I find that fascinating.
I remember the first time that I walked through a small Polish town. Every so often, along the side of the road, there were strange, three-foot-tall rectangular stones sticking up out of the ground.
It made no sense to me why they should be there; all of the area around them was pastureland or open fields with no other huge rocks in sight. Surely they were not naturally occurring, because they seemed to appear very systematically. What could they be?Finally, after more observation, I decided that the stones must be property markers.
You see, just behind most of the rocks was some sort of fence, indicating someone owned that land. Something else that caught my attention was the fact that some of the fences were in need of serious repair, but the rocks in front of them looked untouched by the elements.
Through that, God reminded me of today’s focus verse, which warns us about not removing ancient landmarks. God showed me that as generations pass and new fences need to be constructed on the same site, the original rock—the landmark—stays there. If those stones were removed, eventually people would lose track of their true property lines. They could lose some or even all of their land, and future generations could lose out on their inheritance.
Spiritually speaking, God’s Word is the Rock. It is true and unchanging. Every now and then, our “fences” may need some repair or even rebuilding, but we must take a look at those Bible truths and make sure we construct our fences and boundaries in accordance with what God has established. That way, we can be sure we will enjoy the full blessing of the Gospel, and we can pass it on to future generations as well.
Today, let us take a moment to make sure that everything in our lives is aligned with God’s Word and that none of those ancient landmarks have been moved.
