Dr Heskith Vanterpool

The Management and staff of Eureka Medical and Bougainvillea Clinics are pleased to announce that Dr. Heskith Vanterpool has been elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), the oldest and most prestigious of the three such Colleges in the UK,  election to which fellowship is envied by many Physicians around the world.

The instillation ceremony to the Fellowship, took place in July this year, at the college in London followed by a dinner hosted by the President of the College.

Dr. Vanterpool  obtained  Membership of the RCP (MRCP)  in 1982 upon successfully completing all parts of the RCP’s  postgraduate  examinations. The  Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, unlike that of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS),however,  cannot be obtained by examination; neither is this Fellowship an automatic procedure but rather according to the by-laws of the RCP, the Physician is elected based on his or her  distinguished contributions  in the practice of medicine, medical science or medical literature. Members can only be recommended or proposed by a Fellow or Fellows of the College, the Council then conducts a rigorous review process of each proposed candidate and only after the council is satisfied that the criteria are met is the candidate offered the Fellowship. Approximately 50% of proposed candidates are accepted to the Fellowship.

Dr. Heskith Vanterpool’s brilliant career had its beginning at the BVI High School (now Elmore Stoutt High School) as valedictorian of the class of 1970.  Awarded a scholarship to study medicine by the BVI Government, he entered the Faculty of Medicine, University of the West Indies (UWI) in 1972 where he won the Anatomy prize at the Preclinical Exam. For this he was awarded a further Scholarship by UWI to pursue a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Anatomy at the University of London (1975).  He then returned to UWI to complete his medical degree and was one of two students  of the Class of ’78 with 110 graduates to obtain on overall honours degree.

Dr. Vanterpool then pursued postgraduate training in General Internal Medicine  in the UK  where after being  successful in all parts of the  MRCP exams, he then  worked  for just over two years as a Registrar in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at West Middlesex University Hospital   and the Charing Cross Hospital, London.

Returning to the BVI in 1985, Dr. Vanterpool worked at Peebles Hospital as specialist in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology until 1996. During this time he also acted as Chief Medical Officer several occasions.  Simultaneously he developed his private practice which has grown into what is now Eureka Medical Clinic. In 2004-5 he returned to Peebles Hospital as Chief of Medical Staff.

After 20 years of service in BVI as Internist, Gastroenterologist and General Practitioner, Dr. Vanterpool returned to the UK where he pursued and obtained a Masters degree in Cardiology (with distinction) from the Imperial College London/The Royal Brompton Hospital. He also pursued training in Echocardiography at The Hammersmith and Northwick Park Hospitals, leading to his accreditation by the British Society of Echocardiography.

In the field of Cardiology, Dr. Vanterpool has also done additional training in Pacemaker implantation and management and offers these services here in BVI.

Dr. Vanterpool is the Medical Director of Eureka Medical Clinic, a multispecialty medical center, and of The Bougainvillea Clinic, a general hospital with emphasis in the surgical specialties (Plastic and Reconstructive, General and Colorectal, Orthopedic and Spinal, Gynecologic, ENT and Urologic Surgery). He specializes in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Cardiology (non-invasive), and practices at both clinics.

We the Management and Staff of both Eureka Medical and Bougainvillea Clinics are very proud of Dr Vanterpool’s achievements and his service to this community.

Please join us in congratulating him on his election as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).

Congratulations! Dr Vanterpool FRCP (London).
