Drummer Girl inspired by Beyonce, plans to start all-female band

Well-known local drummer Nicole Wheatley, aka Drummer Girl, has been so inspired by Beyonce’s all-female band that she is actively seeking to form her own all-female band.
In an exclusive interview with BVI News Online, Wheatley said women have “power”.
“I mean not to sound all full of myself, but I’m a female drummer. Maybe one of the only well known female drummers in the Caribbean,” she said. “The idea came about when I saw Beyonce’s Band, which is all female. One of her Drummers Nikkie Glaspie just happens to be my friend.”
Wheatley said she expects some challenges due to the existence of the dominant male bands.
“I know it may be a challenge because I don’t really see any female musicians around other than singers, but nothing helps but trying. I mean you never know who is out there and wants to show their talent,” said Wheatley, who has been playing the drums mainly for the Hardcore Band out of Virgin Gorda.
She adds: “Well the kind of music I intend to bring is not the kind of music a Showtime or Jam Band would play this band would be more on the entertainment side, playing in hotels, private parties – anything from calypso to alternative rock, reggae etc.”
Wheatley said she will give the band a name when she gets the required number of personnel which is five, including herself.
“… Hey if there is a next female drummer out there, I wouldn’t mind stepping aside,” she said.

She is looking for skills in guitar, bass, keyboards and vocalists. As to how soon she intends to form the band, she says, “Time-wise I cannot say because I do not know who will come out. When the band is established I intend to get a horns section, but if there are girls who can play any horns instrument contact me.”
In addition to be inspired by Beyonce’s all-female band, Wheatley said a lot of people have also been challenging her to give it a try.

Finally, Wheatley, a former Showtime Band member, was asked how she felt about the split of Showtime.
“Everyone has been asking me this question. I’ve not been a part of the band for some time now. Whatever happened, happened for a reason and may they both have much success,” she replied. “Let us as BVI entertainers try and reach for the stars, trust me we have a long way to go.”

Go for it, Drummer Girl. I remember first seeing you play in a video for one of those drumming contests. I expected I’d be seeing you again somewhere. Female bands are rare, but not impossible. I was in a female band for two years and when I left I thought it was highly unlikely I’d be able to start another female band here in west Florida, but after only one month of searching, I managed to pull together a band of talented, professional women with great attitudes (no proud to be a bitch mentalities). The hardest part is usually finding the drummer, so that’s where you and I have the advantage

Years ago I said an all girl band would be on point once they are taken as serious musicians. Niki has the right idea and this is the right time to do it. The only problem in the BVI is not a lack of musicians but ‘serious responsible’ musicians. So called musicians who are not just looking for the free lime and publicity(popularity) but to actually just focus on the music. BVINews has just gave Nikki some free publicity and since it’s just a minimum of five women needed it shouldn’t be that hard to filter out the ones who are not serious.
There are some people out there just trying to get popular, now this is a hard and tough duty that Nicki has decided to take one, i’ve known her from time she use to play with the Shooting Stars some twenty years ago and from then i knew she was always a serious musician, i hope people would take this as an opportunity to showcase the talent the BVI has to offer (in women), Good luck with this one my girl, really good luck

How about if u cant play an intrument, but would love to learn something so u can join the band? The all girls band sounds like a nice idea, its very different.. All the best with it, I wish i could have played some sort of intrument so i can be apart of it.
I think the idea she is looking for is people who already have some sort of experience, who knows maybe you can learn

Thanks to everyone who is supporting me on this project, i hope to get things going pretty soon, like i said alot of people have been asking/challenging me to try and start a female band. Anyone that knows me knows the love i have for Music (All Kinds), trust me once anyone is interested whether it be 1,2,3 something will happen, it’s no rush cause when the band comes out (hopefully) we coming out Hard!!! Ok, Ok, so this band will be only women? SEXY!!!! HOT!!!! I’ve seen that girl Nikkie Glaspie in action and trust me she is one of the baddest Drummers i’ve seen period!! Nicky i visited the BVI and heard you play for this Rock Band you have got it going on!!! And to get a female band in the BVI would not only be something out of the ordinary but this can take BVI to a next level in Music Locally and Internationally. So i say Try your best, if no one comes, continue trying cause nothing beats a trial but a failure.

as an ex member of a very successful ALL FEMALE band in the 80ties and 90ties I can only say more power to you as it is possible , Don’t give up your goal there is a lot of female talent here and the local artists need to be supported ALL THE WAY

Drummer girl seems to be passionate enough to pull something like this off, and knowing her for sometime now, I can’t see why she can’t pull this off. More power to you and good luck with it.
