The BVI Hoop It Up foundation completed their second annual Easter Hoops and Virgin islands Showcase camp at the Multipurpose sports complex in Road Town, Tortola BVI.
The Easter Hoops basketball camp was conducted from April 6th – April 13th on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. The camp attracted 115 boys and girls from ages 5 – 18 and it was a huge success and was conducted by 6 American coaches along with local coaches who combine to teach and improve the basketball skills of the kids.
The younger campers learned the skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting while having fun and playing games, and the older campers where given more advance drills in the same skills and learned how to apply them into basketball games. The visiting coaches were very impressed with the structure of the camp, and the energy the campers brought every day. The final day of the camp brought Virgin Gorda campers and Tortola campers together at the multipurpose complex for games and an award ceremony. Each child was given a camp tee, water bottle, and an award of participation, there were also three shooting games where each winner won a basketball donated by Play 2 Win sports shop.
The Virgin Island showcase camp was conducted on April 12th at the Multipurpose complex on Tortola, BVI. The camp attracted 38 young men and women from the USVI and BVI to showcase their talent to visiting American coaches.
The camp started out with individual assessment of the players, then there were two excited games where players played their heart out to earn the opportunity to play high school and college basketball in America. The 2011 showcase camp signed 6 players who are currently in America at their respective institution, and this year’s camp is projected to double that number.
The camp saw a visit from director of sports; Patrick Harrigan, Minister of Communication; Hon. Mark Vanterpool, and Minister of Education; Hon. Myron Walwyn who presented each coach with a package prepared by the BVI tourist board. The coaches were really pleased with the hospitality of the island, and they all would be honored to return and help the children and young people of the BVI in the future.
These events would not be possible with out the generous sponsors of Road Town Wholesale LTD along with Gatorade, and Dasani water, Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Hon.Andrew Fahie, BVI Tourist Board, Travel Wize, and BVI Apparels.
The foundation would like to give a special thanks to the parents who give their children this opportunity to experience the camp, and also give a special thanks to the crew of the multipurpose complex who did a great job of preparing the facilities throughout the camp.
The next event for the Hoop It Up foundation is the resume of Books and Basketball after school camp, and Future Star camp, these programs will resume on Monday April 30th, please call 544 0480 for more info.
