Health Minister Ronnie Skelton has challenged residents to help expose perpetrators of domestic violence, adding that a number of agencies will soon sign a protocol aimed at collectively addressing the ‘alarming’ increase in such offences throughout the territory.

Though not giving comparative figures, the minister noted that, “from 2009 to 2012, the number of reported domestic violence cases have increased from 69 reported cases to an alarming 185 reported cases”.

In his message to observe October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Skelton noted that both men and women are victims though women are at a greater risk.

He also called on the community to assist in curbing domestic abuse which includes those that are physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, and psychological.

“As a community, it is important for us to encourage abused persons to not only seek help but to come forward and expose their abusers… We can no longer look at domestic violence as our neighbour’s business but as the community’s business,” declared the Minister of Health and Social Security.

“We must teach our children while reminding ourselves that respect is universal and should be expected in and out of relationships.”

Skelton continued: “We must acknowledge the fact that domestic violence is not just a public health issue, but a social issue; a social issue that produces adverse effects on the sustainability of our society such as the weakening of our family structure and the diminishing of our human capital.”

Regarding the way forward, the minister announced the signing of a Protocol which he said will be a critical step aimed at outlining a coordinated response system to the growing problem of domestic violence in territory.

“In the upcoming weeks, the BVI Health Services Authority, the Social Development Department, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and the Director of Public Prosecutions will be signing the Domestic Violence Protocol,” Skelton promised.

At the original post of strange things, some of you just wont quit until you are sued. In person, you must be just as asinine as your post indicates. Go report the abusers then! Skeltons are certainly not above the law, and that’s a fact!

What protection is afforded to those who come forward? Where are the safe havens? Violence normally escalate shortly after the abused person leaves or reports incidents.

Leaving or reporting abuse is more complicated than saying “expose your abusers.

There needs to be an intensive program of behaviour modification and anger management.

It should be instructive that there has been an alarming increase precisely during the period of the global economic depression.

Women have also become more financially and sexually independent and to some extent more confrontational than they were in the past.

Men do have problems coming to grips with this.

Notions of acquisition, possession and desertion are often at the root of these problems of domestic violence.

So while the traditional religious and social values are still at work in the background,( which set the stage for certain expectations), the new social dynamic is in conflict with those traditional norms.

New behaviours and values are also being transferred from other cultures as well as the social and electronic media.

It is one thing to establish laws to protect society and the most vulnerable among us. But
it is yet another for people to gain insight into their behaviour, and obtain strategies to change it.

This is the way forward to secure a lasting
      and fundamental change.

Well you sound ANAL….I guess you did not read the article. Not even the Headline did you read. The Minister said “….come forward and expose the abusers….” He is asking you to call names isn’t he? So start calling them. Do as your being asked by the Hon. Minister Skelton himself. He did not say “Call names, except Skeltons”. For sure it seems that your angry or bitter about something, so get it out of your system, it will feel better, I Promise.

I think your comment is very disrespectful to Hon. Skelton. He is making a statement in his official capacity. Why do you think it appropriate to attack him in this way. Is he responsible for the actions of persons related to him or who has the same last name?

Please let us know when you start talking what would happen. How would it affect him? He is not guilty of domestic violence. Please open your mind and emanciapate yourself from the bias and hate you may have against Hon. Skelton.

P.S. I am not a relative. I am just a community-minded person who is sick and tired of this type of behavior on these sites.

No Mr. Skeleton we need to expose something worst than domestic violence perps, in fact they are adults and need to defend themselves accordingly. No, let us expose the PEDOPHILES as we can see with the recently reported cases. It has got to stop and I’m telling you the people will start to take the law into their own hands.
