Ferry crew members in trouble for not disclosing 13K in cash

BVI News Staff - Saturday, April 14th, 2012 at 10:12 AM

Cash

Collin St. Clair, the Smith’s Ferry crew member who was arrested and charged for not declaring $13,325 to the Customs Department, was yesterday, April 13, granted bail in the sum $30,000 signed with one surety.

St Clair pleaded not guilty. The incident took place on April 11.

Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham told the court  that Customs officers conducted  a search on the vessel, ‘Bomba Charger,’ which arrived from St. Thomas at Road Town between 3 and 3:30 and allegedly discovered a blue back pack in a wooden compartment in the wheel house. In the bag was a vacuum bag wrapped with duct tape. Inside the vacuum bag was said to be a large amount of cash.

The defendant is said to have told Customs that the money was given to him by one of his co-workers who got off at West End, and that the co-worker was going to collect the money at the cleaning hole at Road Reef Marina where Smith’s boats are kept.

The defendant, during interview with the police, allegedly said he did not know how much money was in the bag, and that he stored the bag containing the monies in a general locker in the wheel house. It is alleged that St. Clair admitted that he did not have any intention of declaring the monies to Customs.

During mitigation, St Clair’s lawyer told the court that his client did not get a chance to declare the monies because Customs approached the vessel and searched before declaration could be made.

Has a point, if there was $9,999.99 there would have been no crime.

If this guy’s story is true, he should learn from it. No one should accept a package from another person while travelling in this day and age. You have no idea what it may contain that could land you in trouble as in this case. And ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law or good judgment.

Everyone and their mother know that any money over 10 Gran has to be declared. Failure to do so or at least ask what and how much money was in the bag is asking for trouble. Who walks around legitimately with over 13 grand in a bag anyway? Sounds suspect to me. And the fact that the money was not declared at the ferry dock in Road Town and was to be picked up at Road Reef ads to the suspicion.

Anyone who is paying attention should know that those boats are being closely monitored for illicit activity. Not saying this situation is such, but given that fact, you would think people will be more cautious. I guess not.

Haters keep them coming Merrick. BVI News is number one for me because they are not politically affiliated; have no hidden agenda; are unbiased with their blogs; and they have more blogs than anyone else. VINO broke the story about rhymers murder but BVI News had nearly 700 comments…VINO barely had a 100…Dont even talk about Platinm. Most days bvinews tallies more comments than all the competitors my friend. Its obvious they had issues yesterday as the site was never updated for the entire day.

This story has been sitting in our inbox 24 hours ago but due to some technical difficulties we were unable to do any uploading since 10 am yesterday. If you realise, we didnt update for the entire day. No we do not think we are number one or number two or number four. We just do our best and pay our bills. And we are still able to :)

And you do are darn good job covering the news while you are paying those bills! Nice reply by the way. Do not pay attention to this mindless trivia that some would like to engage you in. Stay focus on your bottom line, $$$$$$$.

Your apolitical coverage is what I personally appreciate the most, and the fact that you do not censor bloggers for their political views. Everyone is welcome to the discomfort of some.
