Fugitive murder suspect captured after two years on the lam

After two years on the run, Murder suspect Caba Alphonso Woodrup, 29, was brought back to St. Thomas to face charges in connection with the 2010 shooting death of Patrick Smith.
Woodrup was detained during a traffic stop by law enforcement in Fulton County, Georgia where he was living. Police said Woodrup fled St. Thomas less than 24 hours after Smith’s murder.
Patrick Smith was shot several times while in the Paul M. Pearson Gardens Housing Community on April 25, 2010. He later died from his injuries. Major Crime Detectives at the time conducted an investigation and determined that Woodrup was the suspect.
On July 27, 2010 an arrest warrant was issued for Woodrup charging him with 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Investigation revealed Woodrup left St. Thomas on April 26, 2010, within 24 hours of the murder. The warrant information was placed into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.
On July 22, 2012, after evading capture for over two years VIPD was notified via NCIC that Caba Alphonso Woodrup was detained by the Fulton County, Sheriff’s Office. Woodrup signed a waiver of extradition. Major Crimes Detectives and Intelligence Unit Agents traveled to Georgia and extradited Woodrup back to St. Thomas to face the charges.
On August 3, 2012, Woodrup was present before Honorable Judge Adam Christian where he was advised of his Constitutional Rights. Unable to post bail Woodrup was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending further Court proceedings.
