We take this opportunity to welcome returning BVIslanders and visitors to the BVI for our August Festival celebrations.

In this annual event, we recall the blessings of emancipation and we remember with reverence the generations of our forefathers who lived, toiled and died without ever experiencing the sweet taste of freedom.

It is a moment when we come together and give thanks for the blessings that have been bestowed upon us and upon generations past. We give thanks for our freedom. We give thanks for our good fortunes and good health. And we give thanks for each other. Additionally, as we have in years past, we marked this occasion by joining together with family and friends and renew old bonds of community. For that is the heart of what Festival is: a celebration of life. Not just our individual lives, but of the life of our people.

We are encouraging everyone to let this time be a festive one and not a time for revenge nor fights, or crime. Our islands are known for serenity and tranquility so let us all play our part to keep these islands peaceful.

Remember alcohol and driving do not mix. Remember, do not speed and be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians. Let us all support our police as they ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

We would like to recognise the VI Festival and Fairs Committee for working tirelessly to take care all of the little details that go into this big production in Road Town, East End/Long Look and Carrot Bay.

Government continues to recognise and appreciate the contributions of all residents to the development of the BVI. We encourage everyone, BVIslanders, non-BVIslanders, and visitors to come on out and together let us all enjoy the Festival activities and events.

We pray God’s protective Hand upon us as we join in “Bringing Back Our Cultural Past, Let’s Celebrate BVI Festival With Class!”

Happy Festival!

      Dear Pops

VIslanders and BVIslanders is a term that is used interchangeably so take a chill pill and find another horse to ride.
On second thought, Doc should stick solo to “VIslanders “at this stage. Tis now an old time story.
I am beginning to think that the debate is moot however. Reference to the happening of crime and violence in our Festival indicates that we are neither VIslanders nor are we BVIslanders, not even Tolians, in the true sense of these words. Sigh!

I would want to change the last sentence of the speech to ….GOV recognize the POSITIVE contributions but must denounce the negative contributions of all residents in the development of the BVI.
