Fifth district representative Elvis Harrigan and  Acting Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Sandra Ward are currentlyin Dominica representing the government at the Second Meeting of the Council of theCaribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

The meeting, scheduled for June 23, will bring together top level officials with disaster management responsibilities to review the 2010-2011 emergency events and todiscuss effective ways of strengthening the disaster management capacity across the region.

Other agenda items will include discussions on the Monitoring, Evaluating and Reporting framework and protocols for the sub-regional disaster emergency response operational units.

Delegates will also contribute to discussions on updating the blueprint for advancing the comprehensive disaster management model at the national level.

The meeting will also hear recommendations from CDEMA’s Technical Advisory Committee which held its second regional meeting in the Territory from May 24-27.

Additionally, delegates will discuss climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, and forecasts and preparations for this year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season.

A representative from the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) will make a special presentation on the Global Assessment Report: Caribbean Progress and Policy Implementation.

The CDEMA council meeting is being held in collaboration with the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The Territory is one CDEMA’s 18 member countries which provides participating states with reliable and comprehensive information on disasters and coordinates the establishment, enhancement and maintenance of an adequate emergency disaster response.
