During this year, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College is featuring profiles of past students as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.
Sheroma Hodge, currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Media and Communication, with a specialisation in Multimedia, at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, Jamaica.
Sheroma Hodge graduated from HLSCC in 2004 with the Associate Degree in Natural Sciences, having started in 2002. Immediately after graduating, she proceeded to enter UWI to pursue her bachelor’s. However, she has returned to the British Virgin Islands on numerous occasions during her breaks, as well as for her programme attachment, working variously at Government’s Department of Information and Public Relations and at the College’s Public Relations and Desktop Publishing Departments.
While at HLSCC, Sheroma has assisted with the revision and re-designing of the College’s website, which is still a work in progress, and generally with public relations and desktop publishing.
Just recently, Sheroma won the top multimedia student award for her class. She is anxious to complete her programme and return to serve in her homeland.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programme and future
HLSCC was a good stepping stone for me in transitioning to university level. Combining being in my home territory and familiar faces, HLSCC allowed for me to get a college experience without the feeling of being far away from home.
That in itself, to me, is the role of HLSCC: giving BVI students the college experience with the benefits of being in their home territory.
My hope for HLSCC’s future is its ability to offer additional associates degrees, as well as the ability to do extensive bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and even doctorate degrees locally. As I say that, I am reminded of a quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., which says, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.”
Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your life
The knowledge I received at HLSCC provided me with a foundation upon which I can continue to further build on my education. HLSCC motivated me to acquire academic and personal discipline.
