The Haitian Government made a financial contribution to the Government of the British Virgin Islands in response to the kindness showed during the December 2010 disastrous human smuggling attempt which left 8 Haitians dead.

At a press briefing the Deputy Premier, and Minister of Health and Social Development, Dancia Penn, commented on the role that her Ministry played in dealing with and assisting the stranded Haitians following the tragedy.

Although the Deputy Premier announced that her Ministry was especially concerned with the burial of the eight dead, she explained that: “The Ministry of Health and Social Development has a responsibility with other agencies to deal with incidences of that kind.”

Penn stated that the Police and several other agencies assisted greatly, during the unfortunate incident. She thanked the team of the Ministry of Social Development and all involved who she said showed the true human face and extended kindness.

The Minister stated that she was especially pleased with the way the community as a whole responded in what was a very sad and difficult situation.

She also thanked the Haitian community for the way they responded.

“I think it is right that I say here that there was in fact and it is not yet all resolved; but I would put myself out and say we did in fact receive in a mark of appreciation from the Haitian Government… a financial contribution for what this Government did as it relates to our aid to their people,” the Minister announced.

Penn announced that the government as a whole, inclusive of Cabinet, and the National Security Council all shared the view and dealt with the affected individuals in as correct and in as human a way as possible.

    You people are sickening! Every darned thing is a problem. Reminds me of the story of the son, his old father and the donkey! No matter how they tried to please everyone some group always had something negative to say.

    It is disrespectful not to accept someone’s token of appreciation and even more shameful to take it back. The BVI did the honorable thing by accepting Haiti’s token. They can now donate that to the BVI Haitian Association, donate it to VISAR, create a small fund to provide relief in future such tragic accidents, etc.

    Why are you always so negative people! Search your souls for the darkness within you and get it out! Be more positive and optimistic in all things!

    What? I hope the government refused the financial donation and asked that they use they money to help the hungry, homeless and sick people of Haiti.

    The BVI cannot reject an offer of financial contribution from the Haitian people. In all things give thanks. Really the people of Haiti are operating in this instance of long established principles, and it maybe in the writer’s interest to read a little on ancient gift giving and receiving. To Bless and be Blesssed.

    This is sad. The BVI so broke and heartless that it is accepting a financial donation from Haiti??? They should be ashamed of themselves for accepting this when Haiti has so many problems that need serious rectifying.

      @hmm,
      It doesn’t matter, it (the funds) will be returned in one form or the other. The people of the BVI is still giving to Haiti, don’t you think Haiti just want to say thanks.
