Minister of Health and Social Development Honourable Dancia Penn, OBE, QC recently applauded caregivers for exemplary service.
Minister Penn expressed her gratitude at a service held to recognise care workers, care givers and the role played by the BVI Red Cross and the BVI Health Services Authority in training individuals in the care giving field.
Honourable Penn shared, “As the members of our population age, and in some cases when people become disabled, the need for long-term care increases. This need for long-term care has the potential to put a strain on our resources within the hospital or other institutional care facilities such as the Adina Donovan Home.”
The minister added, “Home care therefore provides the welcomed expansion of requisite services that allow patients to receive high-quality care, while remaining independent in the familiar environment of their homes. In doing so the need for an extended hospital stay or the transition into a nursing home decreases.
Some 40 caregivers from Tortola and Virgin Gorda were honored by the Social Development Department as Caregivers Week was celebrated for the first time in the Virgin Islands under the theme “Loving Hands and Compassionate Hearts”.
According to the Social Development Department the provision of ’care’ has now extended beyond government-owned and operated facilities, and the functions carried out by caregivers and home care workers are diverse.
These include light housekeeping, assistance with taking medication, preparation of meals, maintaining proper personal hygiene, assistance in attending medical appointments and providing companionship.
Through the department’s home-care programme, every year over 50 persons remain at home and receive the care necessary to lead healthy and independent lives. Through the government-run Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly, 30 residents receive care provided by 25 geriatric aides.
The Social Development Department under the Ministry of Health and Social Development is charged with promoting the social well-being of the Territory’s residents.
