Health Ministry advises of recall of Jones’ Mock Salt blends

Thursday, February 2 – The Environmental Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Social Development is advising the public of the voluntary recall of Jones’ Mock Salt Original and Jones’ Mock Salt Spicy Southwest Blend by Jones’ Seasoning Blends LLC due to the potential contamination with Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this voluntary recall.
This recall has been initiated due to possible Salmonella contamination of the celery seeds ingredient used in Jones’ Mock Salt.
The affected products were directly distributed to grocery stores and markets in California, Minnesota, and Washington; and were also sold through internet orders on www.jonesmocksalt.com.
The affected products are: Jones’ Mock Salt Original: Organic Salt Free Seasoning, 1.6 oz bottles (UPC 0 94922 16616 6), 12 oz bags (UPC 0 94922 07199 6) and 16 oz bags (0 94922 16616 6); Jones’ Mock Salt Spicy Southwest Blend: Organic Salt Free Seasoning, 1.6 oz bottles (UPC 0 94922 01560 0).
There is no lot number identifying the bottles or bags, and any products purchased from July 1, 2011 to December 14, 2011 should be destroyed.
The Environmental Health Division has conducted investigations with the companies that import food items into the Territory and have confirmed that they do not carry the affected items. However, restaurant owners and food establishment operators are urged to exercise due caution when purchasing any food items online since there is no guarantee that the products can be safely consumed.
