Herbert and Saran-Shultheiss win telecoms competition

Friday, August 3 – Akeya Herbert and Anya Saran-Shultheiss are the first-place winners of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (TRC) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competition that aimed at getting women and girls more involved in the world of telecoms.
Six winners were chosen from a field of 169 applicants, and they were revealed on August 1 during a press conference held at the Moorings Conference Room. Ms. Herbert won in the category of 16 and under while second and third place went to Brittani Stoutt and Akyla Herbert, respectively. Mrs. Saran-Shultheiss won the category of 17 and over while Ms. Pamela Penn took second place and third place went to Ms. Adel Pereira.
The first place winners received an IPAD 3, second prize victors took home an iPhone 4s and third prize recipients were awarded a Kindle Fire. Participants had to tell TRC through Facebook or twitter how ICT have impacted their lives.
Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool confirmed his commitment to support efforts such as these for the advancement of ICT locally. The Minister also shared that Cabinet is also doing their part in using technology more as they have asked for the distribution of reports and other documents to be done via email as opposed to hard copy.

Minister Vanterpool expressed that the Territory has a lot of possibilities as it relates to the area of technology, “As I see it the possibilities are limitless for this area to make telecommunications our next economic frontier that can ultimately reap economies of scale for us, as is being done in industries like tourism and financial services.”
The press conference was moderated by Director of Human Resources Mrs. Karia Christopher who reiterated that the competition aimed at encouraging women and girls to use technology and become more involved in this field. She also thanked all the persons who played a role in making the competition a resounding success.
Chairman of the TRC Ms. Ayana Hull and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Guy Lester Malone also embraced the promotion of the use of ICT in daily living.
The theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was “Women and Girls in ICT”. The day was created to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually since 1969.
