H. Lavity Stoutt Community College has been formally recognised by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honour Society for continued commitment to its honours programme, which began in May 2006 when the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter was chartered.

Phi Theta Kappa has awarded the College with a Four-Star International Award for Chapter Development, five International Pinnacle Awards for New Membership, a Regional Honours Study Topic Essay Award, and a Regional Participation Award.

The announcement of the awards was made during a brief ceremony held at the College’s Paraquita Bay Atrium on Tuesday 27 March, during which 28 students were inducted into the BOS Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. As part of the induction ritual, each student was required to sign in a register, light a candle, and repeat a pledge before receiving the Phi Theta Kappa golden pin.

President of HLSCC Dr. Karl Dawson, who was inducted as an honorary member, congratulated the honour students and urged them to continue as examples of excellence, both at the College and in the community.

The President also praised the work of the Chapter Advisors––a number of HLSCC lecturers––for promoting the honours programme at the College and for being the driving force behind the initiative, which has seen students inducted every year since its inception.

To be inducted into the programme, students are required to have at least 12 hours of degree course work and a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.4, which they must maintain.

In the past two weeks, HLSCC student Esteban Smith, who also serves as International Vice-President for Division II of Phi Theta Kappa International, was selected as a 2012 Guistwhite scholar. He is the first British Virgin Islander to win this scholarship.

Another College student, Renata Rubaine, recently won the 2012 Phi Theta Kappa Florida Regional Essay Competition, the prompt for which was the International Honours Study Topic for 2010-2012, “The Democratisation of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise.” Her entry competed against submissions by students from the 88 chapters that fall under the banner of the Florida Region.

Phi Theta Kappa, an honour society for two-year colleges, is the largest in American higher education with more than two million members and 1,250 chapters in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Palau, Micronesia, the BVI and elsewhere.
