A house explosion prompts the BVI Fire and Rescue Services Department to educate the community about the dangers of improper storage of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

On March 28 the department received a call regarding a house explosion that took place in the Chalwell area around 8:12 p.m.

After investigation fire personnel confirmed that the cause of the fire was due to a gas leak from a LPG tank which was housed in an enclosed area along with water pump.

When the water pump cut in it generated an electrical spark that was sufficient enough to ignite the gas cloud which resulted in an explosion, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, William Penn reported.

“No injuries were sustained to the occupants of the residence, however doors and windows were blown-out as a result of the explosion. LPG is a very volatile gas that should be stored in a properly ventilated and isolated area away from open flames or mechanical or electrical devices which generally can give off sparks and ignite flammable gases,” Penn warned.

He added that fire safety is everyone’s business and a collective effort must be made to ensure that the proper precautions are taken so that lives and properties are not affected by such hazards.

The Fire and Rescue Service is committed to educating the public about the effects of fire and all other man-made and natural accidents and disasters.
