Wednesday, March 7 – His Royal Highness (HRH) The Duke of Gloucester Prince Richard visited the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) Primary and Secondary Division on Virgin Gorda, today Wednesday, March 7, as part of his five-day visit to the Territory on behalf of Her Majesty (HM) Queen Elizabeth II who celebrations her Diamond Jubilee this year.

His Excellency the Governor Mr. Boyd McCleary, and Mrs. McCleary, joined in the visit to the school where principals Mr. Hilroy George and Mrs. Caryl O’Neal Alexander from the primary and secondary division respectively were on hand to greet HRH The Duke along with several students from both primary and secondary division, faculty and residents of Virgin Gorda.

A ceremony was held on site for The Duke where renditions were given by the school choir, secondary division band and the after-school steel band.

Delighted with the enthusiastic welcome, HRH Prince Richard expressed how privileged he was at being asked to visit the British Virgin Islands.

“It is a great pleasure to visit your school. The school represents your future. From what you are taught here in school and in the future, you can play an important role in your own community and possibly some of you will go out into the wider community and contribute in interesting and important ways all over the world, HRH Prince Richard said to students.

Primary student Miss Jermiqua George presented a book entitled “Virgin Gorda: An Intimate Portrait” written by Mrs. Joan Soncini. The 144-page hardback book recalls history and the many characteristics of the island as it features 30 interviews of both persons born on Virgin Gorda and those who migrated to the island. An Intimate Portrait includes just over 200 photos and the story of the island’s development since Laurance Rockefeller’s opening Little Dix Bay in 1964.

His Excellency the Governor Mr. Boyd McCleary, CMG, CVO, secondary principal Mr. Hilroy George and teachers Mrs. Heida Selwood and Ms. Tamesha Wheatley also gave remarks.

While at the school HRH The Duke was given a tour of various classrooms and viewed an arts and crafts display by the primary students
HRH The Duke of Gloucester’s visit, which began on Monday, is intended to provide opportunities for him to meet the people and to learn more about the culture, life and history of the Virgin Islands. The Duke’s visit officially marks the thirteenth Royal visit hosted by the Territory since 1787.

    Ms. Soncini i am not sure if you remeber taking photos of a father and his boys at the docks in virgin gorda, well i thank you that i am featured on the front of this book, i feel famous already, :lol:
