Huggins awaits his fate

Fifteen days after he was found guilty of rape, 53-year-old Franklyn Huggins on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 is expected to be sentenced for the offence in the High Court.
Huggins was accused of raping his girlfriend’s daughter at the couple’s Soldier Hill home in 2007.
He was found guilty of the offence on June 21, 2010.
According to the prosecution, sometime in the early afternoon on January 21, 2007, Huggins raped the then 15 year-old in her bedroom while the two were home alone.
In her testimony, the virtual complainant (VC) said Huggins showed her a pornographic movie of a couple engaging in oral sex. She testified that Huggins told her he could make her feel like that.
Feeling uncomfortable the VC left the bedroom and entered hers. It was then Huggins is said to have entered the VC’s room clad only in his underwear.
According the VC, Huggins then forcibly opened her legs and penetrated her. The VC said the act occurred for about 20 to 30 seconds. She also claimed Huggins touched her breasts.
Initially, when arrested by police Huggins admitted to showing the VC the porn and of smelling her but denied the rape allegation. However, on the witness stand during his trial he refuted the claim of smelling the VC.
Meanwhile, the VC’s mother Omelle Douglas testified on Huggins behalf telling the court that her daughter was rude to her and Huggins.
She also disclosed that at first she believed her daughter’s contention but began to have doubts after hearing the VC ‘giggling’ during the rape kit examination at Peebles Hospital.
