Huggins tune up for Leewards with Caribbean Scholastic Invitational 200m win

JUNE 5—After collecting bronze in the 100m, Nelda Huggins sprinted to a 200m victory in the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Carolina, Puerto Rico on Saturday afternoon, during a tune up for the Leeward Islands Jr. Championships at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Saturday and Sunday.
The Carifta Games’ 100m silver medalist performance highlighted a series of 10 silver and bronze medal finishes between Top Notch and Sprint Tech Track Clubs athletes against their counterparts from the United States and Puerto Rico.
Huggins of Top Notch Track Club, became the territory’s first athlete to win a sprint event during the seventh edition of the competition, when she took the furlong in 24.57 seconds, after running 24.65 in the prelims, with Sprint Tech Track Club’s Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses placing fifth in 25.38. She had a personal best of 25.28 in the eliminations.
Huggins ran 12.04 for third place in the 100m after a 12.02 prelim, with Sprint Tech’s Taylor Hill running 12.34 in seventh, after a 12.41 run to advance.
Top Notch’s J’Maal Alexander was second in the 100m in 10.67 seconds with a 3.0 tailwind, after a 10.60 prelim. He did not contest the 200m final after running 21.62 in the semis, a National Jr. and National
Scholastic Record, eclipsing the 21.68 he ran earlier this season.
Other Top Notch athletes getting podium finishes were Trevia Gumbs with silver in the Shot Put after a heave of 11.57m (37’11½”). Eldred Henry in his first off island competition, had a toss of 39.88m (130’ 10”) in the Discus Throw to finish third, and with fourth in the Shot Put with a personal best effort of 13.57m (44’6½”). Kala Penn recorded a career best leap of 5.38m (17’8”) in the Long Jump to snatch bronze, and became the No. 7 all time performer.
Sprint Tech’s Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner was second in the 800m in 2 minutes, 16.22 seconds, with teammate Niayla Smith third in 2:23.82.
The Sprint Tech quartet of Warner, Moses, Jonel Lacey and Hill, ran the seventh best time ever by a BVI Women’s 4x400m relay squad, to place second in 3 minutes, 51.41 seconds, just off their club record of 3:50.87. The Sprint Tech “B” foursome of Niayla Smith, D’Je Moya Smith, Deya Erickson and Ashley McCall, were third in 4:16.52.
Other performances: Tynelle Gumbs, Javelin Throw, 4th, 36.10m, (118’5”). Lacey, 400m, 4th 1:00.66 (57.90 prelims). D’JeMoya Smith, 1:04.49.
Brandon Andrew 110m Hurdles, 14.90 (+3.8), 14.98 in semis with a +3.1 tailwind. He had foul trouble in the Long Jump and settled for ninth with a 5.27 mark, (17’3 ½”) with a +2.2 wind.
Deya Erickson, 4th, 100m Hurdles, 16.26 (+3.8). Ashley “Redz” McCall, 6th , 17.63.

I feel the when the athletes are competing against each other at home they should use the different track club but when they all travel abroad they should be representing the BVI and not a club. The other students of Sprint Tech were all ESHS students therefore they should have all be registered as ESHS students.
