At-Large Representative Vernon Malone

Territorial At-large representative Vernon Malone believes more projects can get done in the territory if government uses its money wisely.

Malone who is a back bencher on government was speaking on a recent ZBVI Radio Programme, ‘A Look at the Community’.

“There is a lot that we can do, for example we are now going to fix the port in West End, we are going to spend 20-plus million dollars. It is my view that we spending too much money to do that. We can fix the port spending about $14 million then you can fix Trellis Bay with what is remaining.

“Look at Trellis Bay – you can’t tell me that should exist in a modern society like ours; but what we are doing is not prioritizing properly and we use a lot of money in order to get one big grand thing fix whereas, if you use the money more wisely. This is the problem with the succeeding administrations in this country: everything must be a big thing,” Malone said.

He said the same thing is happening with the new Peebles Hospital where a lot of money is being spent.

“If we didn’t spend all this money on this hospital, we won’t have to keep ‘cargoing’ people from Virgin Gorda. Nothing hurts me like that when I see somebody being pulled off a stretcher from the back of a boat. If we have more enlightened and progressive attitudes towards our administration, the BVI could be way ahead, it can be way ahead and I will say that here and I will say it anywhere,” Malone added.

We could save a whole lot of money if we just get rid of the waste of time backbenchers!

Seems that there is always talk of excessive project costs but there is no accountability in the government. A new department needs to be created, an audit group to review projects, ascertain the choice of tenders, the cost of the project, the time to complete the project and review monies paid out etc. But then those individuals chosen to review the spending of the government would likely be bribed and paid off too.

@Auditor General, There is a department that does this the problem is the ministers don’t use the information they are given by this department because if they do how will they get there kick backs.
