Today, July 9, Shawn Scatliffe who allegedly threatened to hang his ex-girlfriend among other things pleaded not guilty to four counts of threatening language and guilty to insulting language when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens.

In outlining the allegations, Crown Counsel Jude Hanley told thecourt that the 19-year-old complainant was in a relationship with Scatliffe from 2010. However, it was noted that the relationship came to an end in 2011.

The court heard that in March of this year Scatliffe was charged with several offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to the same complainant, and that one of the bail conditions was for him to stay away from the complainant which he has allegedly breach.

Hanley said the complainant went home to her Nottingham Estate apartment when Scatliffe ran out of the nearby bushes and told her that if she doesn’t take him back he will end her life. It was also noted that during the same month, Scatliffe sent a text message to the young lady’s phone on a number of occasions.

In one of the alleged text the defendant wrote: “If I can’t have get you, no one else can get you. I will send you home back in a body bag.” In another text he allegedly stated that he will tie a rope around her neck and hang her.

It was disclosed that the defendant sent the text messages because the complainant refused to answer his calls.

The court heard that the complainant is very afraid and has been unable to stay at her apartment.

Crown Counsel Hanley told the court that numerous reports were made to the police, and Scatliffe was warned.

The defendant allegedly called the complainant on July 1 and when she didn’t answer he called her again from an unknown number; which she answered, not knowing that it was him. When the complainant answered the defendant allegedly said: “If you don’t answer I will come up to your apartment and cut you up,” and noted that this time he was serious.

On July 4, the defendant allegedly sent the complainant another text message which read, “[expletives] you [expletives]. You need help, you look [expletives] up today.”

Scatliffe’s attorney, Mary Lou Creque, during her application for bail, told the court that the complainant tells the defendant one thing, and then tells the police another thing.

However, Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens stated that the defendant seems to have a serious pattern of behavior since he has another case involving another young lady and he breached the bail condition of staying away from her also.

The magistrate therefore remanded Scatliffe. His case will come up again on July 12.

The police officer who gave this young man a warning should be suspended for dereliction of duty. There is a pattern of misconduct here that should not go unheeded.

Now is that a defense, that bs that Mary Lou told the Magistrate.? That boy is sending all kinds of threats to this girl, he was warned to stay from her and he will not. Now his lawyer says in his defense, that he tells the woman one thing, and the police another thing. What is her point? I don’t know what law school she went to. You see this nonsense all the time, where warnings, and protection orders don’t work. Now his lawyer talking sh..t about what he means when he makes his threats. I am asking the Magistrate to deal with this seriously, and don’t give this boy the opportunity to physically harm this girl.
