A Haitian man appeared in the Magistrates Court today on two charges relating to the 33 Haitians, of which eight are dead, that were brought into the territory illegally just over a week ago. He was remanded to custody.

Roro Edourre is charged with acting together with persons unknown to aid or assist with the illegal transit of 33 persons to the territory of which those persons are neither nationals nor permanent residents.

He is also accused of acting together with persons unknown and knowingly conveyed persons for hire by water in a 35 foot power boat when the said vessel was so loaded as to be unsafe.

The allegation against Edourre is that he captained a power boat from St. Maarten to St. Thomas with 33 persons. The court was told that on this journey, the vessel was spotted by US coast guard which attempted to intercept it. In its attempted to evade the coast guard the boat collided into a reef in Brandywine Bay that resulted the detention of 25 persons and the death of another eight.

Through an interpreter, the accused told the court he has been attempting to get a lawyer to represent him in court and he had asked for a phone call to Haiti. He said the request was not honored.

Magistrate Valerie Stephens told police to give the accused a list of local lawyers so he can contact them and arrange legal fees.

Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin told the court that more charges could be brought against the accused as two complaints were laid against him as investigations continue.

The prosecution was given until Friday by Magistrate Stephens to have the complaints laid before the court.

The matter will again come up in court on Friday and in the meantime  the accused will be kept at the Road Town Police Station.

Silly silly blogger, that will never happen because “they aint from here”. That will be the cry, when this boat initially crashed you heard what most ppl were concerned with? “Wha they doing here? i dont want no cholera, send them home”. We have evolved into a dank dark evil society of ‘ME ME ME ME” ppl. Welcome to the new VI, however you will see hundreds of bloggers praying and commenting that the latest person arrested on some gun or robbery charge be given a chance. “He’s a good boy” and then the Minister of miseducation will go and speak on his behalf. The BVI stinks to high heaven right now. Ppl always say god dont like ugly, but he dont like stink either.

Due to the sad circumstances we really need to let the Haitian people stay for at least a year or two in order to get a break from all this hardship. Please allow them to work tax free so that they may return to Haiti in a better position. As a so call Christian community, you think after singing hymns like, rescue the perishing care for the dying or we are one in the spirit we are one in the lord or better yet, quote holy scriptures below.

Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. We have few christian in this communuty, 99% is just church goers.
