It was a large party at the Claudette “Boopie” Smith Festival during the international soca night.
The event attracted the largest crowd since the village opened last weekend as the likes of Kassav, Shurwayne Winchester and Skinny Fabulous thrilled the crowd.
Local Highlights
Virgin Gorda Calypso Queen Sister Joyce was one of the performers, and she presented a new calypso song titled “What’s Good for the Goose.” The song spoke about topical issues such as the need for a VG airport and mentioned the July 26 House of Assembly sitting.
I-Ritical sang his new song “Wish You the Best” and two other songs; he was well received by the excited crowd.
Reigning Calypso King Luther B performed his winning song “Legacy” and last year’s song “Children Without Identity.”
Quito Rhymer’s new video “Reggae Express” was a debut during the grand show as well.
International Entertainment
Kassav was phenomenal, and even after a lengthy performance, the crowd still chanted that they wanted more, which was acceded to. The nostalgia was clear as many stated seeing the veteran Band that is credited for the creation of the zouk genre was a dream come through.
The performance of Kassav was in itself a show within a show as the Band did a lot of African dances, and instrumental demonstrations that left the audience mesmerized.
The rhythm was released when Shurwayne took the stage and boldly announced that his show was all about movement. He got the crowd hype with samples from various genres before belting out his original songs such as “Wine On It”, “Wining Addiction”, “Open The Gate,” “I Can’t Wait,” and “Don’t Stop.”
The artiste, after making the crowd part the ground and jump in and out of the divide, shared bottles of water for a wet fete which ended with him being doused. Winchester then went and brought Skinny Fabulous on the stage which officially commenced the pandemonium.
After demonstrating his dance 6:30 with the assistance of some very nimble ladies, Skinny jumped off the stage and led the crowd to the bar and back.
Together Skinny and Shurwayne had the crowd jumping and running, and until the audience finally rocked the barricade so hard that it was finally moved with the request of Winchester.
The carnival atmosphere became even more energetic when five-time defending champions Showtime Band took the stage and the scene became overwhelmed with the shaking of empty gallon bottles and the waving of the BVI flag.
The band itself advocated BVI patriotism with Alton Bertie who first waved his flag when he was introduced as a band member for Shurwayne. He planted the flag on his keyboard and kept it there as he played for Showtime Band.
One of Showtime’s vocalists draped a flag over his shoulder while he held one in his hands. Another singer had a large flag flying from his pocket. The flag scene caught on with fans as other persons in the crowd waved their VI flags too.
