Karia Christopher

Talk show host, Karia Christopher, will be hitting the streets on Wednesday to film a video in her bid to be the winner of the Oprah Winfrey Ultimate Viewer competition.

Powerhouse Winfrey, whose syndicated talk show ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ comes to an end this year, issued a challenged to her vast viewership audience of who is the ultimate viewer. The applicant can either send a letter or video to the show’s producers.

BVI News caught up with Christopher at the Moorings.

“I am absolutely the ultimate viewer, and because it is opened to international viewers the BVI gets a chance to participate so I am very excited about it,” Christopher said.

To test that theory, the local talk show host will be involving residents of the BVI to lobby for her quest in winning the competition. Christopher opted for a video because she believes it would have a broader appeal and acknowledged the assistance of CBN channel 51 as cameras will be following her around while she speaks to family, friends and strangers in answering the question: Why Christopher should be the ultimate viewer?

“I want to show the producers how the BVI is really a part of the competition. I want them to know that Karia Christopher is the Oprah of the BVI, and I just thought it would be more fun for it to come from other people and not from myself. I am stepping out of my comfort zone and going out there with the camera and talking to persons about this exciting experience. I wanted to be impromptu so don’t be surprised if you are stopped on the street and asked what makes Christopher the ultimate viewer. I just want to have fun making the video,” explained Christopher.

An avid viewer of the Oprah show for the past 18 years, Christopher admitted she is an “Oprah-fanatic”.

She said: “I think there are worst people out there than I am. I am not the stalker type, but in terms of admiration I do love her and I think she motivated me to do this show at the local level and really heightened my excitement in really and wanting to take it to the next level.”

Optimistic of her chances to be the winner, Christopher, whose talk show Real Talk With Karia Christopher has created some buzz in the Territory, told BVI News she wants to be an ambassador for the BVI.

“It will be a great experience to promote the BVI on the Oprah Winfrey show,” she said with a laugh.

So what about Oprah Winfrey that fascinates Christopher?

“I believe it is because she is a black strong woman who did not come from a not wonderful rich background and she proved herself to the world and it is so admired. She inspires and motivate people  not be afraid to dream big,” Christopher stated.

As for her competing in the ultimate viewer competition, Christopher said: “‘I think it is a fabulous opportunity to tell my two children and any other boy or girl out there who wants to be a rock star and basketball – to shot for the star.”

It is hoped by Friday, July 9, 2010, the video will be on its way to Chicago.

The Oprah Winfrey show is the highest-rated talk show in American television history. It is currently the longest-running day time television talk show in the United States, having run nationally since September 8, 1986, for over 24 seasons and nearly 5,000 episodes.

The show was renewed through 2011, but in a 2008 interview with Larry King. Oprah tearfully announced that in 2011, she will not renew her contract, thus ending the show.

Stop being a hater, she never said that she wanted to be Oprah many times on her show she expresses her admiration for her “Oprah” but always professes she wants to be the best Karia out there. Congratulate our own and stop hating, create your own dreams and strive for excellence. Karia you are loved by the mases the ones with louest mouths are the people you wish they were a fraction of what you are. Never give up!

Karia needs to be her self… she has this thing about her wanting to be like Oprah. Be Karia and only Karia you were told by a guest speaker already to be yourself and be the best you at the first Women of Power Summit. Oprah made herself what she is today by being herself. Karia be yourself you can ge there too. Realtalk!

I think that Christopher should be the ultimate viewer because she is enthusiastic about the life of others. Oprah is about enlightening the world of the socioeconomic ails in America and around the world, Christopher is about allowing people in the people to share their story to change someone’s heart. In any case, both hosts are about making a difference.

Say what is correct about the excessive use of her hands. Just look at any show. Karia if you do win and get on the show….please please keep your hand movements to a minimum it is distracting in truth. Just look at a tape of Oprah interviewing techniques and get a few more tips. But good luck anyway. Best Wishes

Karia, why not get your best friend to interview people. Its not so objective to have you interviewing persons in the community for them to tell you and oprah why you are the ultimate fan. Its just does not come off as genuine and on the spur of the moment as you say. I would like you to win but rethink your strategy to give yourself an even greater chance.

Have you ever said hello to her? It goes both ways. Must she just walk around and say to everyone? Do you do that? Who in the world really walks around grinning and saying hello to everyone? Only someone retarded. Karia is an awesome person and rather than waiting for her to approach you, why don’t you approach her ans see what her response is like? Good Luck to you Karia, you are my star regardless to if you do or don’t win.

Nothing is arrogant with wanting to be the best at something! Why settle for less? You need to believe in yourself and strive for what you desire. Go set your goals and priorities before you try to discourage people. gosh! ……………….and yes, she is my friend!

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 2 Thumb down 14

I know people are encouraged to believe in themselves but when one goes beyond what is really the case then they are bothering on crazy. I doubt Ms C’s purpose for doing this is about promoting the BVI but rather promoting herself. I have never been able to look at her show to the end because HER HANDS are a big distraction. She has not mastered control of her hands when speaking and so the interview appears very unprofessional. Furthermore to consider herself the Oprah of the BVI is being very presumptions. How many people really watch that show? I was turned off when I heard MsC say one time that she wanted to be the best talk show host in the BVI. I thought that was very arrogant of her. I just think she needs to cool off.

    @Judith Charles:

But as a tv talk show host she’s not a very friendly person, she kinda acts as if she’s better than the “commoners” and that’s not cool, she would pass you and not even say hello, wow. I don’t watch her show just because of her attitude, and i cannot help but think if she’s acting this way now suppose she is chosen as the ultimate viewer, but if she’s chosen by the ultimate viewer, kudos to her

I agree. I do understand Mrs. Christopher’s intent, however I don’t see how I as someone that don’t know Mrs. Christopher can say she is an ultimate fan. Only persons that knows her personally will know that she is the ultimate fans. I am certain we have quite an amount of ultimate Oprah fans here in the BVI, persons who are not in the public eyes, as Oprah has been in our living rooms for the past 25 years.

Wondering why no one has said where and when I could catch this talk show. Instead a few people have selected they dislike my comment. What is that about? I am only showing interest and want to know when and where this lady’s show is on so I may watch it. What’s there to dislike about that?

@Judith Charles: Just saying Ms Charles, I don’t condone wrong doing or pulling down and I can understand what you’re saying and relate to it, but the comments are genuine. I don’t think that anything said prior to your post was destructive, but rather criticism (if I may call it that) – that can help to bolster Karia on her quest for stardom.

If you are going to post that the people being interviewed are selected randomly, then it should be just that. People will take offence to Karia’s success, because we are crabs in a barrel. For a “regular” islander to achieve what she did (not that I know anything different than the other person) speaks volumes, and people on the small land surfaces tend to get jealous quickly.

Anyway, I don’t think that today’s comments on this article were “bad” or uncalled for. You seem to have an affection for Karia, which is admirable but constructive criticism is necessary for growth!

You’ve shown a commendable level of confidence and courage, so to that i tip my hat to you Karia. You’ve grown and i assure you that you still have a long way to go but i acknowledge your efforts. It’s an international vybez so it’s going to be much tougher than if it was local or regional but keep your head on and keep striving for excellence. Don’t be discourage if you wasn’t the chosen winner because you’re the BVI’s own Oprah Winfrey (lol), you’re looking like it to and remember to ALWAYS SHOOT FOR THE MOON SO IN THE EVENT THAT YOU FALL YOU CAN LAND AMONGST THE STARS!!!

Karia, from the time I have known you, no one or anything have ever stopped you from going after a goal or dream you have. I know your ultimate dream is to one day interview Oprah, and maybe this is your time to do so. Karia, don’t mind what people say, some may post good comments, bad comments and in between ones but you are the one that’s in control of your own destiny. A good friend once said to me in which I have made it my philosophy, “Who angers you controls you”. One last thought, Karia, Keep your head up no matter the five second talk, besides “if they crucified Jesus, who you are? Remember God must come first and “You are the one that controls your own destiny”.

I’ve never heard of this woman nor her talk show. Have been living here for seven years now and do catch the odd show on Ch 55. Was thinking that her show sounds interesting and if she is really good at interviewing and entertaining people then I wish to see her show. Obviously local shows and personalities need more advertising. The only things I ever hear about is what musical entertainment, DJ or band, is playing at what local establishment. So what days, what time and where can I catch her show Real Talk?

OH MY GOSH!!! Even to this article there has to be a negative response. Is there nothing that rates only positive responses? Are we as a community so jaded above everything? If the respondents are already chosen, then as a person who thinks highly of herself I’m crushed to think I’m not a “high end” person. But here’s what I would say if I were asked. I’ve seen many of Karia’s shows and have always marveled at the type of hard hitting questions she asks her guests. Many times I’ve sat there and said “no, she didn’t ask them that”, although I really wanted to know the answer to the question. Oprah is also well known for keeping it real and asking the tough questions. And that’s why I think Karia should win. She’s a serious Oprah wannabe. There are much worse things to desire in life than to be like Oprah. So here’s to Karia winning this challenge. Good for her that she’s stepping out of her comfort zone and doing something out of the norm. Good luck Karia!!

I think its a good idea and catch not only for Karia but for the BVI’s exposure…but like one poster I’m sure the selected few were already positioned for this… :-( I would have love to be in this…cause I’m sure half of the “high class” people she would interview have not even watched any of her local shows…this sucks….but go for it Karia…your courage is commendable.
