Labour Commissioner Oleanvine Maynard

Employers and employees will have the opportunity to better understand the new labour code when it is gazetted and becomes operational in the British Virgin Islands.

Speaking on the new code that was recently passed in the House of Assembly, Labour Commissioner Oleanvine Maynard said her department intends to formulate a hand book and have it distributed to employers and employees in the territory.

Speaking at a media conference this week to explain the code, Maynard said “we are working on a handbook for both the employer and employee and those will be distributed as soon as they come on stream.”

“With the coming on stream of the new code, it will make life at the Labour Department much easier in terms of enforcement; also in the administration of the policies for the department. The new code is very easy for anyone to pick up and read and understand it,” the Labour Commissioner said.

She said the Labour Department will always be there to assist if anyone has any questions about the code.

“They can always come and we will be more than willing to sit down with them and explain what is in the code, so I am looking forward to working with it as we proceed and I expect the support of everyone who will be working along with it at the department,” Maynard said.

I have not seen it. However I trust that the “best” minds came together to bring about this new labour code, and that it will serve for the greater good of the country. While i’m not on any side, i think the new laws should be set to make first BVIslands, then Non-BVIslands living here as comfortable as possible, then control the number of person who migrate to this country. This country is made up of more non-BVIslands, the labour force, hotels, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, not to mentions “renting apts” Imagine if they all were to leave one behind the other because of stiff Labour Laws, Imagine!

Ha! Just more murk to obfuscate and cloud – It’s all Smoke and Mirrors – the Labour laws will continue to be matters of $$$, whim and personal prejudice under Ms. Maynard.
It’s a travesty that this avaricious woman has been vest with any kind of governmental position, much less more power. Her scheming and self-enrichment positions are an embarrassment to the BVI
