Tortola, British Virgin Islands, June 27, 2012 – There are just a few days remaining for the submission of nominations for the  The CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank 2012 Unsung Heroes campaign.

The public has until June 30 to nominate individuals who dedicate their personal time to improving the quality of life for others without personanl gain. Nomination forms are available from CIBC FirstCaribbean bank in Tortola and Virgin Gorda and can also be downloaded from www.cibcfcib.com. Programme ambassadors at the branches are available to provide assistance with completeing the forms.

“Unsung heroes are amongst us everyday and in many different ways,” says programme coordinator, Mrs Dorolyn Belfon, corporate sales associate for CIBC FirstCaribbbean. “They could be helping the elderly and the sick, running a homework or activity club, or offering support to any number of people who need a helping hand in life. The Unsung Heroes programme is an opportunity for us as a community to encourage them in their efforts and to say ‘thank you’ for making this a better place.”

Unsung Heroes initially are sought at a country level. The local finalist’s cause will benefit from a $6,000 dollar gift from the bank and will go on to be considered for the title of ‘Rregional ‘Unsung Hero’. The regional winner will receive an award of $7,500 with the two runners up each receiving $5,000.

This is the ninth year of the programme and has been promoted in the Virgin Islands since 2005. Previous Unsung Heroes of the BVI include Mrs. Romalia Smith of Anegada (2005), Mr. Clement and Mrs. Vera Smith of Tortola (2006), Ms. Tessa Gunter of Tortola (2007) and Mr. Ernest “Chinko” Evans of Tortola (2008). The launch of this year’s campaign was attended by Mr Milton Mclean, Mrs Annie Gardner, and Mr Ishmael Scatliffe who were the unsuing heroes of 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively. Mr McLean was a regional runner up in 2009.

The nomination criteria require the individual to be over the age of 21 and be resident in the Caribbean for over five years. Further, the individual or cause should have no or minimal publicity in the media but the cause could benefit from the exposure.
