UPDATE TO LETTER: What’s VINO trying to prove?

Dean Greenaway - Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 at 7:31 AM

Greenaway

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: When my General Secretary Delva Thomas called about the twisted headline context of remarks I made during Thursday’s ceremony to welcome home our delegation from the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships, I knew something had touched a nerve.

As a journalist for the last 28 years, I was extremely disappointed to read that I stated “Government need to better fund athletes and the sub theme, “Says despite the meager financial support, Gov’t gets the glory hence the need to put its money where its mouth is!”

If VINO has and its “team of reporters around the Virgin Islands” have a problem with the Government and wants to make a statement, they should have the testicular fortitude to do so, not trying to twist mine or anyone’s words to deceive the public into believing inaccuracies.Anyone who attended the ceremony, viewed it on television or heard it on radio knew what I said.

I’ve been involved in some aspect of sports administration since 1985 when I returned home and began organizing road race among the many voluntary services I’ve lent to track and field, cycling and road racing over years.

I can say with out fear, favor or contradiction that the current Sports Minister Hon. Myron Walwyn, has been the most engaging I’ve dealt with over the years. He sees what the BVI Athletics Association is doing as the leading sporting organization in the territory that has been producing.

During my journalistic pursuits, I bump into the Sports Minister at different sporting events all the time and I know his commitment to sports. So, there’s no way, even with my usual bouts of senior moments, in my right mind, I could have publicly insinuated what the “esteemed” VINO and its “team of reporters around the Virgin Islands” put in print, on which I received several calls.

My remarks on Thursday, had the input of two other executive members in order that what was being articulated, would have reflected the BVI Athletics Association’s position and not Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway.

During my remarks when our Carifta Games team returned from the Bahamas in April with eight medals, I gave an example of what the Bahamas Government does with its athletes, particularly its Juniors. The by and Act of Parliament, Government funds its junior athletes to competitions.

In no combative nor aggressive way, did I put forth my suggestion that the House of Assembly consider something similar for track and field athletes attending IAAF World Youth, IAAF World Jr. IAAF World Sr. and Pan Am Jr, Championships in particular.

But, VINO and its “team of reporters around the Virgin Islands” found a twist that best suits them – giving online readers an impression for those who weren’t there, that the statements on their site were my summation.

However, I’m not the least bit surprised. We send out a number of press releases that VINO fail to carry. After our General Elections on October 15, the 2008-2012 and the 2012-2016 Executive Committees met for a formal transfer of information, just two days after our elections. This was a first for the association and any sporting body in the territory.

VINO and its “team of reporters around the Virgin Islands” however, failed to carry the story because it was too positive.

But then again, sensationalism is the hallmark of VINO!

Yours Truly,

Dean Greenaway

EDITORIAL NOTE: A day after Greenaway’s letter (above) was published, Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) issued the following response:

Firstly, Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) stands by its article published on our news site on July 19, 2013 titled; ‘Government needs to better fund athletes’- attributed to Dean Greenaway.

Many of our readers and even persons who were at the ceremony have called the news room to confirm what they heard Mr. Greenaway say at the ceremony on July 18, 2013 to welcome home the delegation from the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships.

While we are well aware that as a civil servant he must be careful in what he says about the government of the day and our understanding of the pressures and fear civil servants have on the issues of victimisation and discipline, we find it curious that Mr. Greenaway will deny what he has told the public.

In fact, after reading his letter published on July 22, 2013 on two other online news sites, many persons in the sporting community also called our news room to confirm that Mr. Greenway held that position about lack of adequate government funding for athletes for many years, not only with the current Government, but previous Administrations.

So it came as a surprise why a person who has dedicated his life to sports and the youth will at this stage in his career try to undermine his own credibility.

Many have made suggestions as to the reasons, however, it’s not prudent to speculate or to believe all that we are told.

In fact in a recent exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, Mr. Greenaway [audio clip attached] again raised the issue of the need for proper funding to provide the necessary support for Virgin Islands’ athletes. He mentioned in the interview the need for an athletic trainer, along with medical support and the likes, which will go a far way in helping Virgin Islands’ teams travelling overseas to be successful.

He said in the interview that this would be at an additional cost, making the point yet again that his funding is not adequate, the same premise he repeated in his speech at the welcome home ceremony on July 18, 2013.

Mr. Greenaway also made allegations against our news site that we failed to publish many of his press releases because they are positive!

He will know, as the journalist he claims to be, that all news organisations in the Virgin Islands receive upwards of 10 to 15 press releases per day from local, regional and international public relations firms, private organisations and both Governments and Oppositions.

Therefore, it is the job of our editorial team to decide what is to be posted. Furthermore, on our staff we have a sports reporter. This is the only online news site in the Virgin Islands with such a staff member. Our sports reporter most often would cover Mr. Greenaway’s sporting events thus reducing the need to post his press releases.

The Sports Desk at Virgin Islands News Online has always worked with Mr. Greenaway and continues to do so. On occasions when there are challenges, he would even often call our esteemed Founder and Chairman Mr. Julian Willock.

It has been long cemented within the community that Virgin Islands News Online has no axe to grind with anyone, nothing to prove, but just to report the news objectively, professionally, and to remain fair and balanced.

This is why we can boast about being number one in the online news market and having a reputation for accuracy, which is unmatched by any other media house.

As for Mr. Greenaway’s new found praises for the Minister for Education and Culture, we will leave that for others to debate. However, we will continue to work with Mr. Greenaway to get his sports messages out and thank him for his support, thus far and commitment to sports in the Virgin Islands.

Finally, we continue to thank our many readers, staff, advertisers, along with our team of reporters and the many persons who continue to call and offer their wise counsel, information and helpful suggestions. We remain humbled.

When a news site cannot respect the leader of a country and stop slanderous statements,is when we all live in fear of being lost in our own land. VINO NEEDS TO STOP THE ATTACK ON OUR LEADER. WEATHER HE IS RIGHT OR WRONG. He is our leader and the world should know that we are behind him cause we put him there. If we don`nt want him anymore then VOTE HIM OUT.; THAT EASY.

    Dean,

I’m glad that you had the “testicular fortitude” to call out VINO on its questionable reporting habits. Its headlines are misleading and its reporters manipulate the truth.

LAWD VINO again, honestly when I saw the headline of that article I did not read it, It just did not sound like what Mr. Greenaway would say. The 3 J’s (Julian, Jamal & Julian )obiviously has an agenda to distroy this government.
