LIME, the company that has driven telecoms innovation in the BVI since 1967, today announced the winner of its unique photo competition that linked the past with the present.

The LIME Pan-Caribbean competition received more than 1,500 photos entries in what proved to be a popular contest. Tom Chapman, the ultimate winner from over 20 photos submitted in the BVI, having won his new LIME BlackBerry 8520 smartphone, can now enjoy all the conveniences of modern telecommunication devises including instant messaging, video streaming, voice and video recording and web browsing.

In thanking LIME for selecting his photo,  Chapman said “Thank you LIME!  I look forward to the email functions, surfing the Internet and having unlimited access to data.  I was using a small Nokia so this is a big transmission since I need email for work and will now always be in constant communication; it’s nice to be connected at all times.”

In congratulating Chapman, LIME Head of Retail Sales in BVI, Elford Parsons said, “The history of telecommunications in the British Virgin Islands is intricately linked with the history of Cable & Wireless/LIME because we are the company that has brought every telecoms innovation to the territory from the telex, to the internet to mobile broadband technology.”

“We’ve come a long way in telecommunications and this contest celebrates the old and the new by allowing us to take a look back to see just how far we’ve progressed in telecoms equipment and the overall industry over the years” he added.

To celebrate World Telecoms Day, observed May 17, 2011, LIME challenged individuals to submit a colour photograph of the oldest telephone that they own or have legitimate access to.  The aim of the contest was to highlight the evolution of the telecoms industry and telephone equipment over the years.

In addition to the photo competition, LIME recently commemorated World Telecoms Day by partnering with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), through a Career Day road show, spoke to the 7 high schools 4th & 5th Form students throughout the territory, encouraging them to look at ways that the evolution of technology has impacted the world and to pursue technology careers within the BVI.

LIME awarded Joshua Wheatley of St. George’s Secondary School, the winner of the essay competition, with one year’s free Internet access and a free wireless modem.

Young Wheatley is also the recipient of an all-expense paid trip for two to attend a technology conference in Switzerland and $1,000 spending allowance, an iPad and a trophy.

Minister for Education and Culture Andrew Fahie thanked the TRC and its sponsors, which included LIME, for having the essay competition in the secondary schools.

He said technology was not going out anytime soon and it was important to have children more acquainted with technology “in terms of how it can help us in the territory”.
