On Saturday, March 13, Rotary Sunrise of Road Town members teamed up with the Jost Van Dyke’s Preservation Society to host a “Read a Thon” for children from the Jost Van Dyke community.
Approximately 20 students and 8 Rotarians made selections from about 50 books from the Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society’s new Environmental Information Centre. Working together in small groups, Jost van Dyke children, aided by Rotary club members read books out loud to each other, discussed lessons, themes and information obtained from the reading activity, and then wrote down favourite facts or morals on a giant tablet of writing paper that was passed from group to group.
The Environmental Information Centre is a collection of about 700 books, field guides, resources, lesson plans and multi media materials focusing on the natural environment. Materials for the information centre, store in the Preservation Society’s Office in Great Harbour, were purchased with the assistance of the United Kingdom’s Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP), part of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).
