There has been much discussion in recent times of the demise of the special community spirit in the BVI that many in the Territory grew up with.

Letters to the media have bemoaned the negative impact that the financial downturn has had on people reaching out to give to those in need.

However, it seems that given the right opportunity, individuals and businesses are more than willing to dig deep into their pockets and give up their time to help.

Like many organisations, the Governor and his staff decided to mark the festive season by coordinating a project involving the many local businesses that are keen to support community initiatives. Sister Islands Coordinator, Vincent Wheatley, assisted in identifying a family on Virgin Gorda who would benefit from some assistance with their house and garden, a date was set and the phone calls to local companies began.

The generosity demonstrated proves that community spirit is alive and well in the BVI! The Moorings offered a boat to transport the workers (enthusiastic amateur painters and gardeners from the Governor’s office and house) across to Virgin Gorda.

Clarence Thomas, Qwomar and Caribbean Colors provided all the paint and tools they needed to give the house a perfect paint job and Minnies provided a host of lovely plants to get the garden going.

Not to be outdone, local Virgin Gorda Company, Speedys immediately offered transportation from the boat to the house in the Valley and Supa Valu, Bucks and Rosy’s jumped in with offers of juice and water to ensure the workers remain hydrated.
