Local pruning workshop in VG tomorrow

Building on the success of the initial workshop, the Department of Agriculture will host a Fruit Tree Pruning and Flower Manipulation Workshop for Virgin Gorda residents as they continue to promote and stimulate local agricultural
production.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 24 from 10 am until 2 pm at the Vanterpool Building, Virgin Gorda Administration Complex.
Deputy Chief Agricultural Officer Arona Fahie Forbes and Keith Grant of the BVI National Parks Trust will facilitate the one-day workshop.
Workshop participants will be taught how to correctly prune trees, flowers and shrubs by selecting the best branches for trimming. They will be taught branch cutting techniques which all allow water run-off instead of settling and how to apply alternative methods to promote the reproduction of flowers.
Speaking on the knowledge to be gained by attendees, Fahie-Forbes told the Department of Information and Public Relations there is a recommended distance of 20 feet between the planting of fruit trees to ensure optimal plant growth.
She added that selecting a main branch is very important in pruning and sunlight plays a pivotal role in preventing pest growth.
Almost 50 individuals attended the first Fruit Tree Pruning and Flower Manipulation Workshop on Tortola on March 28 which resulted in holding a similar training on Virgin Gorda in response to the positive feedback and interest.
Many attendees described the workshop as ‘enlightening’ and ‘beneficial’ as it presented knowledge and new techniques of dealing with the fruit trees.
The Fruit Tree Pruning and Flower Manipulation Workshop serves to teach both crop producers and home gardeners correct pruning techniques to enhance plant longevity, plant productivity, manage plant growth and increase the overall quality, size and colour of fruits and flowers.
The Department of Agriculture works to enhance the local agricultural industry through training opportunities to develop and strengthen the farming sector.
