Minister appeals to business community to support job, career fair

Friday, February 3 – Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn has issued a plea to the business community to support the Ministry’s upcoming Job and Career Fair to be held on Thursday, February 9th at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

In a recent television and radio message, which will be broadcast on various stations today Minister Walwyn said, “Our entire Virgin Islands community stands to benefit from a cohort of eager and gainfully employed young people. Their energy and talents will be needed to advance our economy as they provide the necessary labour that can be trained to fit an organisation’s culture and add to its goals.”

Minister Walwyn acknowledged and thanked the businesses that have already come forward but called for greater participation from the entire business community.

“A number of businesses have already come forward to offer jobs to these young people and I thank you for exercising sound corporate citizenship. We now need the support of a larger cross section of our businesses community to join this effort.”

Highlighting a responsibility of businesses the Minister added, “Your opportunity to do business in the Virgin Islands also comes with the responsibility to train our youth and assist Virgin Islanders with realizing their professional aspirations. When our youth are productively engaged, it sets the stage for a thriving community that filters into social, educational and economical aspects of life in our territory. In my personal interactions with registrants, they are prepared to take on work challenges, as they now are aware of their role in advancing our Territory.”

As a lead up to the Job and Career Fair, the Ministry held a two week Job Readiness Forum which targeted the 490 individuals who registered with the Youth Unemployment Register. Attendees were trained in communication skills between colleagues, supervisors and managers, customer service, team building, personality profiling and interviewing skills.

Businesses should contact the Ministry of Education and Culture to register for the Job and Career Fair at 468-3701 ext. 3355. Alternatively, they can email the Minister directly at mwalwyn@gov.vg.

The Job and Career Fair, the Job Readiness Forum and the Youth Unemployment Register all stand to motivate and train young people to become enlightened, responsible and prepared to join the workforce as they contribute towards national development.

    The problem with employing local youth is they want to be managers in 3 months, they spend half the time on their blackberry and talking on facebook. You try to discipline or encourage them to be professional and they tell you, “i born here!’ when there is a proper labor code with proper rules and equality the country will prosper and so will the youth. If you employ a foreigner and they dont work you can easily fire them without labor getting involved. I would prefer to employ locals but we simply could not afford to.

      your views are base on humour and is not true, most would have a sense of reality, so they won’t necessarily believe they should be managers after a short time.

    My humble view is that the government needs to put to life the succession plan they does speak about..

    1. If they would move up those in the service that are capable then this would allow space for others to come in

    2. Quit with bringing back the retirees! That is pension plus salary… Side note: Government claims limited funds

    3. Really implement the retirement age…

      I agree.

      I don’t see an incentive other than a sure pay once you show up to work. I think this contributes to the attitudes of some in the service. Who wants to be just a secretary or a messenger for +20yrs?

    Minister Walwyn, I am lost for words when I think about what your doing for the youths. Keep up the excellent work. Know that God have you in this priviledged position for a reason. Continue to use it for the greater GOOD, and with a humble heart.

    I too would like to encourage the business community at large to support the Minister & the Ministry’s upcoming Job and Career Fair. And here’s why:

    a) Those businesses who support these young folks, will be making a positive contribution to the community, and our collective future, and

    b) Gainful employment, no matter how little the reward may be, will give these young folks something to do as oppose to committing crime or thinking illegal activities are a better option.

    If the business community is paying attention to the crime stats, as I am sure they are, it’s clear that those who are running afoul of the law tend to be in the lower age range, so youth employment is essential to reducing those stats.

    Now, given their youth, their resumes will most likely be thin, but nevertheless, everyone has to start somewhere. So I would like to kindly suggest to any business owner that if they can hire any one of these young men and women to please do so. Give them an opportunity to get their feet in the door and prove themselves.

    A message to the young folks enrolled in the program. Do know that what the Minister is attempting to do is not something that many governments do as wise as it may seem, so I urge you to that should you be successful in gaining employment to do the very best job that you can do, and take advantage of the opportunity given. Life is tough, and when your resume is thin, it’s even tougher. So if you become fortunate to get your feet in the door, show up to work on time, be open to learning, and give the best you.

    On a final note, when you do get work and get paid, I don’t care how little it may be, open up a savings bank account if you don’t have one already and put aside a minimum of $25 – $50 dollars each month for a rainy day. And don’t forget if the opportunity presents itself to continue your education. The more education you have, the greater your prospects will be in the job market wherever you are. Best wishes.

        Well, that depends on ones background & qualifications, and the type of job they are applying for. In my world a one page resume will certainly not get a second look, but with these young folks who are at the beginning of their careers, I would agree that a one page resume should suffice.

        But one page or multiple is besides the point. These young people are interested in finding gainful employment, and if the business community can work with the Minister to help as many as possible, that would be a good thing.

      Great point with the savings note. One of my kids put me an all to shame, first job he get he start socking money into investments. Within months his little pay had grown into a neat little portfolio, all the while we the parents sayin we can’t afford investments, that’s for them big money people. Boy tell us, how you think big money people get big?

      Young man reading Bloomberg and managing his investments like a champ. Young people: finance and money management is not just for ‘them,’ it’s for you too, once you getting a little regular money. Build equity while you young and got little or no bills to pay.
